Two questions for inquiry?
Hello, Doctor.
A few days ago, the weather turned cold, and I seemed to have a runny nose.
I visited a nearby ENT specialist who said that my throat wasn't severely inflamed, but my nasal allergies were quite serious, which could cause occasional throat pain in the morning due to post-nasal drip.
I would like to ask you, after taking the medication, I felt better, but suddenly I experienced some discomfort on the left side of my tonsil area.
After gargling and clearing some phlegm, drinking water alleviated it.
Could this be due to dehydration and staying up late? Additionally, my left ear suddenly felt a bit itchy, and I noticed some slightly yellowish fluid on the cotton swab, but after using it, the discomfort went away.
Is this yellowish, slightly moist discharge a normal phenomenon? Also, sometimes at school, I sleep with my head down, and I wonder if my heart rate increases slightly after eating.
I feel like I can hear my heartbeat when I’m in that position.
Should I get this checked out? However, during the health check at the beginning of the semester, it seemed there were no issues.
Thank you.

Dr. Hong Yuanbin reply Internal Medicine
Hello, based on your description, it seems you may have pharyngitis complicated by otitis media.
I recommend visiting an otolaryngologist for an examination of the middle ear.
Regarding the heartbeat sound you mentioned, if there is inflammation in the middle ear accompanied by fluid accumulation, this condition could indeed occur.
Thank you for your inquiry.

Understanding allergies and throat discomfort is a common concern, especially during seasonal changes when the weather becomes colder. Your symptoms, including a runny nose and throat discomfort, are often associated with allergic reactions, particularly if you have a history of nasal allergies. Allergies can lead to inflammation in the nasal passages, which may cause post-nasal drip, where mucus drips down the back of the throat, leading to irritation and discomfort.
From your description, it seems that your ENT specialist noted that your throat was not severely inflamed, but the significant nasal allergy could indeed be contributing to your throat discomfort, especially if you are experiencing symptoms like waking up with a sore throat. This is often due to the irritation caused by mucus accumulation and subsequent drainage during the night.
Regarding the sudden discomfort in your left tonsil area, it could be related to several factors. If you experienced a temporary sensation of something being "stuck" in your throat, it might have been due to mucus or a minor irritation that resolved after you gargled and drank water. Staying hydrated is essential, especially if you are experiencing symptoms of allergies, as adequate fluid intake can help thin mucus and reduce throat irritation.
The itching sensation in your left ear, along with the yellowish discharge you mentioned, could indicate a minor ear issue, such as earwax buildup or a mild ear infection. It is not uncommon for allergies to affect the ears, leading to sensations of fullness or itching. However, if the discharge continues or worsens, or if you experience pain, it would be wise to consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
As for your concern about your heart rate, it is normal for your heart rate to increase slightly after eating, especially if you have consumed a large meal. Lying down, particularly on your stomach, can sometimes make you more aware of your heartbeat due to the position of your body and the pressure on your chest. If you are not experiencing any other symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or dizziness, it is likely not a cause for concern. However, if you have ongoing worries about your heart health, it may be beneficial to discuss this with your doctor during your next visit.
In summary, your symptoms appear to be related to allergies and possibly some minor irritations. Maintaining hydration, managing your allergies with appropriate medications, and monitoring your symptoms are essential steps. If any symptoms persist or worsen, or if you have new concerns, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. It's always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health.
