Is it possible for antibiotics to cause vaginal itching?

I visited a doctor for urethritis, and the obstetrician prescribed a three-day course of the antibiotic "Lysovon capsules." I have taken the medication for one day, and the discomfort during urination has decreased.
However, I have started to experience itching in the vaginal area, and occasionally, the discharge appears light green.
I would like to ask: (1) Is this normal? (2) Do I need to return for a follow-up appointment due to these symptoms? (3) If a follow-up is necessary, should I go immediately or wait until I finish the three-day course of medication?

Hello, it generally does not have an impact.
Please observe for now.
After taking the medication, if you still feel unwell, it is advisable to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

Antibiotics are commonly prescribed to treat bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections (UTIs). However, one of the side effects of antibiotics is the disruption of the natural balance of bacteria in the body, particularly in the vaginal area. This can lead to symptoms such as vaginal itching, irritation, and abnormal discharge, which you are currently experiencing.

1. Is this normal?
Yes, it is relatively common for women to experience vaginal itching or irritation after starting a course of antibiotics. Antibiotics can kill not only the harmful bacteria causing your infection but also the beneficial bacteria (such as Lactobacillus) that help maintain a healthy vaginal flora. When these beneficial bacteria are reduced, it can lead to an overgrowth of yeast (Candida), resulting in a yeast infection, which is characterized by itching, irritation, and often a thick, white discharge. The greenish discharge you mentioned could also indicate a change in your vaginal flora, possibly due to the antibiotic treatment.

2. Do you need to return to the doctor for this symptom?
It is advisable to inform your healthcare provider about the new symptoms you are experiencing. While some mild irritation may resolve on its own, persistent or worsening symptoms could indicate a yeast infection or another type of vaginal infection that may require treatment. If the itching is severe, or if you notice any additional symptoms such as a strong odor, increased discharge, or pain during intercourse, you should definitely seek medical advice sooner rather than later.

3. Should you return immediately or wait until the antibiotic course is finished?
If the itching is mild and tolerable, you might choose to complete the three-day course of antibiotics and monitor your symptoms. However, if the itching becomes unbearable or if you develop additional symptoms, it would be wise to contact your healthcare provider right away. They may recommend an antifungal treatment if a yeast infection is suspected, or they may want to evaluate you further to rule out other possible infections.

In summary, while it is not uncommon to experience vaginal itching after starting antibiotics, it is important to communicate with your healthcare provider about any new or worsening symptoms. They can help determine the best course of action, whether that involves adjusting your treatment or prescribing additional medications to address the symptoms you are experiencing. Maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider is key to managing your health effectively.
