What types of medications can cause hematuria?
Hello, doctor: May I ask if taking (Pofenex enteric-coated tablets "yellow double convex round tablets, C, NK") and (Cifloxin capsules "green and white capsule, ST007") can cause hematuria? I noticed blood in my urine for the first time on March 18 after taking the medication in the morning, afternoon, and evening at 6:30 PM.
Is this normal? Also, can taking these medications cause throat itching, coughing, or weight loss?
Tian, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/03/18
Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology
Hello: Hematuria is unlikely.
As for the symptoms of throat itching and cough, I have not encountered them either.
It is advisable to monitor these two symptoms, and if they persist, further examination is necessary.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Medications can indeed cause blood in urine, a condition known as hematuria. This can occur due to various mechanisms, including direct irritation of the urinary tract, allergic reactions, or even as a side effect of the medication affecting blood clotting. In your case, you mentioned taking two specific medications: "撲炎喜" (Pofen) and "賜福力欣" (Ciflox).
Pofen, which is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), can potentially lead to gastrointestinal bleeding, but it is less commonly associated with hematuria. However, NSAIDs can cause irritation of the kidneys and urinary tract, which might lead to blood in the urine in some individuals. Ciflox, on the other hand, is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. While it is generally well-tolerated, it can have side effects that include effects on the urinary system, such as crystalluria (crystals in urine) or even hematuria in rare cases.
If you noticed blood in your urine shortly after starting these medications, it is essential to consider a few factors. First, the timing of the symptom onset is crucial. If the hematuria appeared soon after starting the medications, it could be related to them. However, other underlying conditions, such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney stones, or other renal issues, could also be the cause.
In addition to hematuria, you mentioned experiencing throat itching and cough. These symptoms could indicate an allergic reaction to one of the medications. Allergic reactions can manifest in various ways, including respiratory symptoms, skin reactions, and gastrointestinal disturbances. If you are experiencing these symptoms alongside hematuria, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
In summary, while both medications you mentioned can potentially lead to hematuria, it is essential to rule out other causes. It is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms in detail. They may recommend urine tests, imaging studies, or even a referral to a urologist to investigate the cause of the hematuria further.
In the meantime, if you experience any worsening symptoms, such as increased blood in the urine, severe pain, or signs of an allergic reaction (such as swelling, difficulty breathing, or rash), seek immediate medical attention. Your health and safety are paramount, and it is better to err on the side of caution when it comes to potential medication side effects.
