Condom use during ovulation with no ejaculation?

Hello doctor, the program indicates that March 19 is the ovulation day.
My cycle is a little over 31 days.
I would like to ask, if I have protected intercourse during the ovulation period (with correct condom use) and there was no ejaculation, what is the likelihood of pregnancy?

Cc, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/03/19

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the chances of pregnancy should be low.
Wishing you good health.

When considering the risk of pregnancy during ovulation with protected intercourse, it is essential to understand the mechanics of the menstrual cycle and the effectiveness of contraceptive methods. Ovulation typically occurs around the midpoint of a woman's menstrual cycle, which, in your case, is around day 14 of a 31-day cycle. This is when an egg is released from the ovary and is available for fertilization.
If you had protected intercourse on your ovulation day, and you used a condom correctly without any ejaculation, the chances of pregnancy are significantly reduced. Condoms, when used properly, are about 98% effective at preventing pregnancy. However, no contraceptive method is 100% effective. There is a small risk of pregnancy due to potential condom failure, which can occur from breakage or slippage, or from pre-ejaculate fluid, which may contain sperm.

Given that you mentioned the use of a condom and no ejaculation occurred, the likelihood of pregnancy is low, but not impossible. The sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, which means that if you had intercourse a few days before ovulation, there could still be a chance of sperm being present when the egg is released.

Additionally, it is important to consider other factors that can influence the effectiveness of condoms, such as the expiration date, proper storage, and the use of additional lubrication, which can help prevent breakage.
In summary, while the risk of pregnancy during ovulation with protected intercourse is not zero, using a condom correctly and ensuring no ejaculation occurs greatly reduces that risk. If you are concerned about potential pregnancy, consider taking a home pregnancy test if your period is late, or consult with a healthcare provider for further guidance.
For future reference, if you are looking to avoid pregnancy, you might want to explore additional contraceptive methods or consult with a healthcare provider to discuss the best options for your individual circumstances. Understanding your cycle and the timing of ovulation can also help in planning or preventing pregnancy effectively.
