Inverted nipple?
Hello doctor, I gave birth to my second child at the age of 37.
About six months after giving birth, I noticed that my nipples had become inverted.
I did not breastfeed for either of my two pregnancies, and the inversion has persisted for about seven years now.
Last March, I went to a provincial hospital for a mammogram and ultrasound, which showed calcifications, but everything else was normal.
I have been undergoing regular follow-ups.
This year, during my mammogram, the nurse inquired about the issue of my inverted nipples and seemed to think it was quite unusual.
The report from the mammogram will take 45 days to arrive.
I did not have any issues with inverted nipples before having children.
Should I have a check-up at the outpatient clinic, or could this be related to breast cancer? Thank you.

More Info
Inverted nipples can be a source of concern for many women, especially when changes occur after childbirth. Understanding the causes, potential concerns, and when to seek medical help is crucial for maintaining breast health.
Causes of Inverted Nipples
Inverted nipples can be congenital (present at birth) or acquired due to various factors. In your case, since you noticed the inversion after your second pregnancy, it may be related to hormonal changes, tissue changes, or even the physical changes that occur during and after pregnancy. The breast tissue undergoes significant transformation during pregnancy and lactation, and sometimes these changes can lead to the inversion of the nipples. Other potential causes include:
1. Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations in hormones during pregnancy and breastfeeding can affect the breast tissue and nipple structure.
2. Scar Tissue: If there was any trauma or surgery to the breast, scar tissue can pull the nipple inward.
3. Infections or Inflammatory Conditions: Conditions like mastitis can lead to changes in the nipple's appearance.
4. Breast Cancer: In some cases, inverted nipples can be a sign of underlying breast cancer, particularly if the inversion is new and accompanied by other symptoms such as lumps, changes in breast shape, or discharge.
Concerns Related to Inverted Nipples
While inverted nipples are often benign and do not indicate a serious health issue, they can sometimes be associated with underlying conditions. Since you have a history of calcifications noted on your mammograms, it is essential to monitor any changes in your breast health closely. Calcifications can be benign or indicate the presence of breast cancer, depending on their characteristics.
When to Seek Help
Given your situation, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional, especially since you have experienced a change in your nipple's appearance after childbirth. Here are some specific reasons to seek medical attention:
1. New Changes: If the inversion is a new development, it is essential to have it evaluated.
2. Accompanying Symptoms: If you experience any unusual symptoms such as discharge from the nipple, lumps in the breast, or changes in the skin texture of the breast, you should seek medical advice promptly.
3. Regular Monitoring: Since you have had calcifications noted in previous imaging, regular follow-up with your healthcare provider is crucial. They may recommend additional imaging or a biopsy if there are concerns about the nature of the calcifications.
Conclusion
In summary, while inverted nipples can be a normal variation, especially after childbirth, it is essential to monitor any changes and consult with a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. Regular screenings and imaging, such as mammograms and ultrasounds, are vital in ensuring breast health, particularly given your history of calcifications. If you have any concerns or notice any new symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further assessment and guidance. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, and proactive management is key to addressing any potential issues.
