Retinal issues?
Hello, I would like to ask if it is safe for me to ride the U-shaped roller coaster in a theme park.
I underwent laser surgery for retinal thinning when I was 10 years old on November 2016.
Now I am in the third year of junior high and almost 15 years old.
The ride description states that it involves high-speed movement along a 27-meter tall U-shaped half-pipe track with significant elevation changes.
Thank you.
Le, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/04/06
Dr. He Jianxian reply Ophthalmology
Theoretically, after undergoing laser treatment for several months, the results should be quite stable, so participating in thrilling activities should not pose any issues.

After undergoing retinal surgery, particularly laser treatment for conditions like retinal thinning, it is crucial to approach activities that involve significant physical stress or rapid changes in motion with caution. Riding thrilling roller coasters, such as the U-shaped roller coaster you mentioned, can pose potential risks to your eye health, especially considering your history of retinal issues.
Roller coasters often involve rapid acceleration, deceleration, and abrupt changes in direction, which can lead to increased intraocular pressure and stress on the retina. For someone with a history of retinal thinning or previous surgeries, this can be particularly concerning. The forces exerted during such rides may not only cause discomfort but could also potentially lead to complications such as retinal detachment or exacerbation of existing conditions.
In your case, since you had laser surgery for retinal thinning at a young age, it is essential to consider the following points:
1. Consult Your Eye Specialist: Before engaging in any high-risk activities, including roller coasters, it is advisable to consult with your ophthalmologist or the specialist who performed your surgery. They can provide personalized advice based on the specifics of your condition and the details of your surgery.
2. Monitor Symptoms: Pay attention to any symptoms you may experience, such as flashes of light, floaters, or changes in vision. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
3. Understand the Risks: While many individuals with a history of retinal surgery may participate in various activities, the risk factors can vary significantly from person to person. Your age, the type of surgery you had, and the current state of your eye health are all critical factors in determining whether it is safe for you to ride roller coasters.
4. Consider Alternatives: If your eye specialist advises against riding roller coasters, consider enjoying other attractions at the theme park that do not involve high speeds or abrupt movements. There are plenty of enjoyable activities that can provide excitement without the associated risks.
5. Follow Post-Operative Guidelines: After any retinal surgery, there are typically guidelines regarding physical activity and movement. Adhering to these recommendations is vital for your recovery and long-term eye health.
In summary, while the thrill of roller coasters can be enticing, your eye health should take precedence. Always prioritize safety and consult with your healthcare provider to make informed decisions about your activities post-surgery. Your vision is invaluable, and taking the necessary precautions can help protect it for years to come.
