Does ginseng contain hormones?

Hello Doctor: I have a fibroepithelial tumor.
Could you please advise me on which medications and foods I should avoid? Also, can I consume codonopsis? Does it contain hormones? Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Xiao Lan, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/04/11

Dr. Yan Sumei reply Traditional Chinese Medicine

Hello! Breast fibroepithelial tumors are caused by the active effects of estrogen.
Regarding traditional Chinese medicine, it is advisable to limit the intake of herbs that contain estrogen, such as safflower, kudzu, angelica, licorice, privet fruit, eucommia, ginkgo, polygonum cuspidatum, clubmoss, astragalus, scutellaria, notoginseng, bupleurum, ophiopogon, herba epimedii, aloe vera, moneywort, houttuynia, dried tangerine peel, mulberry root bark, sophora flower, aster, psoralea, and motherwort.
Additionally, be cautious with herbs that may interact with estrogen, such as angelica, ginseng, angelica dahurica, licorice, and sesame.

Daily life precautions include:
1.
Avoid eating moldy or spoiled food.

2.
Limit spicy and stimulating foods, such as chili peppers.

3.
Reduce the intake of seafood and high-protein, high-fat foods; a light diet is recommended.

4.
Minimize consumption of salted, smoked, barbecued, and fried foods, especially those that are charred or burnt.

Codonopsis, which is not listed among the aforementioned herbs, can be consumed.
Wishing you health and safety!
Best regards,
Yen Su-mei, Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Nantou Hospital

Fibroadenomas are benign breast tumors that are commonly found in young women. They are often influenced by hormonal changes, particularly estrogen. When it comes to dietary considerations and herbal supplements like Codonopsis (also known as Dang Shen), it is essential to approach the topic with caution and an understanding of how these substances may interact with hormonal levels.

Codonopsis and Hormonal Issues
Codonopsis is a traditional Chinese herb that is often used for its adaptogenic properties, which means it may help the body adapt to stress and promote overall well-being. It is sometimes referred to as "poor man's ginseng" due to its similar properties to ginseng but is generally considered milder. Codonopsis is not known to contain hormones itself, but it may influence the body's hormonal balance indirectly through its effects on the adrenal glands and overall energy levels.

While there is limited scientific research specifically linking Codonopsis to the treatment of hormonal issues related to fibroadenomas, its adaptogenic properties may help in managing stress, which can indirectly affect hormonal balance. However, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider before incorporating any herbal supplements into your regimen, especially if you have a condition like fibroadenoma.

Dietary Considerations
When it comes to dietary restrictions for individuals with fibroadenomas, there are no universally accepted guidelines. However, some general recommendations include:
1. Limit Estrogenic Foods: Some foods contain phytoestrogens, which can mimic estrogen in the body. While moderate consumption of these foods is generally considered safe, you may want to limit intake of soy products, flaxseeds, and certain legumes if you are concerned about estrogen levels.

2. Avoid Processed Foods: Highly processed foods often contain additives and preservatives that may disrupt hormonal balance. Focus on whole, unprocessed foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.

3. Healthy Fats: Incorporate healthy fats into your diet, such as those from avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil. These can support overall hormonal health.

4. Limit Caffeine and Alcohol: Both caffeine and alcohol can affect hormone levels and may exacerbate symptoms related to fibroadenomas. Moderation is key.

5. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated is essential for overall health and can help in the proper functioning of hormonal systems.

Conclusion
In summary, while Codonopsis may not directly influence hormonal issues related to fibroadenomas, its adaptogenic properties could provide some benefits in managing stress and overall health. However, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional before adding any new supplements to your routine, especially if you have specific health concerns.

As for dietary restrictions, focus on a balanced diet rich in whole foods while being mindful of estrogenic foods and processed items. Regular check-ups with your healthcare provider are also crucial for monitoring the condition of your fibroadenoma and discussing any changes in your health or treatment plan. Always prioritize personalized medical advice tailored to your specific situation.
