Abnormal bleeding
Hello, doctor.
My menstrual cycle has always been regular, approximately 23-25 days.
I had my period on April 1st, and the flow was slightly lighter than usual, but still within the normal range.
Six days later, I felt completely fine, but this morning, April 11th, I woke up to find bleeding, which was red in color and about the size of a ten-dollar coin.
At first, I thought it might be ovulation bleeding, but then the flow increased to what felt like a normal period, and I also experienced some dull pain in my lower abdomen.
Since I have never experienced this situation before, I am unsure whether I should seek medical attention immediately or if I should observe the situation first.
Thank you very much for your response.

More Info
Abnormal bleeding can be concerning, especially when it deviates from your typical menstrual pattern. In your case, you mentioned that your menstrual cycle is usually regular, occurring every 23-25 days, and that your recent period was slightly lighter than usual. However, the unexpected bleeding you experienced on April 11, which resembled your normal menstrual flow and was accompanied by lower abdominal discomfort, warrants careful consideration.
First, it’s important to understand what constitutes abnormal bleeding. Abnormal bleeding can include any bleeding that occurs outside of your regular menstrual cycle, such as bleeding between periods, heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), or bleeding after menopause. In your situation, the sudden onset of bleeding after a period of normalcy, especially with the accompanying symptoms, could indicate several potential issues.
One possibility is that this could be ovulation bleeding, which can occur in some women around the time of ovulation. However, since you noted that the bleeding has increased to a volume similar to your menstrual flow and is accompanied by discomfort, it may be more than just ovulation bleeding. Other potential causes could include hormonal imbalances, uterine fibroids, polyps, or even conditions such as endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
Given that you have never experienced this type of bleeding before, it is advisable to seek medical attention. Here are some reasons why you should consider seeing a healthcare provider:
1. Duration and Volume: If the bleeding continues or increases in volume, it is essential to get evaluated. Heavy bleeding can lead to anemia and other complications.
2. Accompanying Symptoms: The presence of lower abdominal pain can indicate an underlying issue that may need to be addressed. Pain, especially if severe, should not be ignored.
3. Changes in Cycle: Any significant change in your menstrual cycle, especially if it is sudden and unexplained, should be assessed by a healthcare professional.
4. Rule Out Serious Conditions: While many causes of abnormal bleeding are benign, some can be serious. It’s crucial to rule out conditions such as ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage (if applicable), or other gynecological issues.
5. Peace of Mind: Consulting with a healthcare provider can provide reassurance and help you understand what is happening with your body. They can perform necessary examinations, such as a pelvic exam or ultrasound, and possibly blood tests to determine the cause of the bleeding.
In summary, while some instances of abnormal bleeding can be benign and self-limiting, your situation, characterized by a sudden change in your menstrual pattern and accompanying symptoms, suggests that it would be prudent to seek medical evaluation. Early intervention can help address any underlying issues and prevent potential complications. Don't hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance and support.
