Is it necessary to continue wearing sunglasses after cataract surgery?
I underwent cataract surgery on my right eye on November 10, 2020, and on my left eye on November 17, 2020.
It has been five months since the surgeries, and my recovery status is generally good.
I would like to know if it is necessary to wear sunglasses when going outside, or if wearing clear anti-UV glasses would suffice.
I have heard that after cataract surgery, the most important aspect of care is for the retina.
Is wearing sunglasses the best way to protect the retina? Thank you for your patience, and I look forward to your insights!

Hello Jean: After cataract surgery, if you are sensitive to light, it is best to wear tinted sunglasses when going outside.
If you are not sensitive to light, wearing clear UV-protective glasses is the best way to care for your eyes post-surgery.
Even for individuals who have not undergone surgery, this practice helps protect the retina from UV damage.
At the E-Hospital in Puzi, Taiwan, the ophthalmology department is open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and on Wednesday from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
Please note that online responses are for reference only; it is essential to seek medical attention at a healthcare facility when necessary.
I hope to have the opportunity to serve you.

After cataract surgery, wearing sunglasses is generally recommended, especially when you are outdoors. The primary reason for this is to protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, which can be particularly damaging after the lens of the eye has been replaced. The new intraocular lens (IOL) used in cataract surgery does not provide the same level of UV protection as the natural lens, making it essential to shield your eyes from direct sunlight.
In your case, since you had cataract surgery five months ago and are recovering well, wearing sunglasses when you go outside is advisable. While clear, UV-blocking glasses can provide some protection, sunglasses with a proper UV filter are more effective. Look for sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. Polarized lenses can also help reduce glare from reflective surfaces, which is beneficial if you spend time outdoors, especially near water or snow.
Regarding the care of your retina post-surgery, wearing sunglasses does play a role in protecting your eyes. UV exposure can lead to various eye conditions, including macular degeneration, which affects the retina. Therefore, wearing sunglasses is a proactive measure to help maintain your retinal health.
It’s also important to consider the type of sunglasses you choose. Not all sunglasses are created equal; some may not provide adequate UV protection despite being dark. When selecting sunglasses, look for labels that indicate they block 100% of UV rays. Additionally, wraparound styles can offer better protection by preventing light from entering from the sides.
In terms of indoor activities, if you are in a well-lit environment or near windows where sunlight can be intense, wearing UV-blocking glasses can still be beneficial. However, if you are comfortable and not experiencing any discomfort or sensitivity to light, you may not need to wear sunglasses indoors.
In summary, while it is not strictly necessary to wear sunglasses at all times after cataract surgery, it is highly recommended when you are outdoors to protect your eyes from UV rays and to help maintain your overall eye health, particularly the health of your retina. If you have any specific concerns or experience any discomfort, it is always best to consult with your ophthalmologist for personalized advice and recommendations based on your individual recovery and eye health status.
