There are ants near the toilet?
Hello doctor, my grandmother, her mother, and her brother all have diabetes, but my mother does not.
Recently, I noticed a few ants (about 3 or 4) on the floor next to the toilet and on the toilet lid; it’s not a large number and they haven't gotten into the toilet, but they are nearby.
My parents are worried that I might have diabetes.
I haven't felt unwell recently, but my appetite is poor (I usually have a small appetite and can’t finish half a bowl of rice).
However, I drink a lot of water and urinate frequently.
Last month, I experienced painful urination (without inflammation), and last week I had vulvar itching, for which I consulted a gynecologist.
I was prescribed antibiotics and an ointment (I have not had sexual intercourse).
Now, as long as I wear loose skirts and change my underwear frequently, the itching has subsided.
Given this situation, do I show signs of diabetes? Note: I am 149 cm tall and weigh 58 kg.
A few years ago, I weighed about 65 kg, but I started exercising daily last year and have lost weight, and my weight has stabilized recently.

If there is a family history of diabetes and there are ants around the toilet, it is advisable to visit a metabolic specialist to check fasting blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin to rule out the possibility of diabetes.

The presence of ants near your toilet can indeed raise concerns, especially when considering the potential implications for diabetes. However, it is essential to understand that ants are often attracted to sugar and other food residues, which can sometimes be found in urine if there are elevated glucose levels. In your case, the presence of a few ants does not necessarily indicate that you have diabetes, especially since you mentioned that you have not experienced significant symptoms typically associated with the condition.
Diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes, can have a genetic component, as you noted with your family history. However, just because you have relatives with diabetes does not mean you will develop it. Regular monitoring of your blood sugar levels is crucial, especially if you have symptoms that could be indicative of diabetes, such as increased thirst, frequent urination, and unexplained weight loss.
Your report of frequent urination and increased thirst could be concerning, as these are classic symptoms of diabetes. However, you also mentioned that you have a small appetite and have recently experienced urinary discomfort and itching, which could suggest other underlying issues, such as a urinary tract infection or yeast infection. These conditions can also lead to increased urination and discomfort, which may not be directly related to diabetes.
Given your family history and the symptoms you've described, it would be prudent to consult with your healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend blood tests, including fasting blood glucose and HbA1c tests, to assess your blood sugar levels accurately. The diagnostic criteria for diabetes include a fasting blood glucose level of 126 mg/dL or higher, a 2-hour plasma glucose level of 200 mg/dL or higher during an oral glucose tolerance test, or an HbA1c of 6.5% or higher.
In the meantime, maintaining a balanced diet and regular exercise can help manage your weight and overall health, which are critical factors in preventing the onset of diabetes. Since you have already lost weight and are exercising regularly, you are on the right track. It’s also important to stay hydrated and monitor any changes in your symptoms, particularly if you notice an increase in thirst or urination.
In conclusion, while the presence of ants near the toilet could be a sign of elevated glucose levels in urine, it is not definitive proof of diabetes. Your symptoms warrant further investigation, and I recommend discussing your concerns with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice and testing. Regular monitoring and a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce your risk of developing diabetes, especially given your family history.
