Umbilical bleeding

Hello Doctor, I would like to ask about some concerns I have.
Three days ago, after doing intense abdominal exercises at the gym, I felt discomfort in the area near my navel.
The next morning, I noticed dried blood stains around my navel (which can be easily removed), and there was a small amount of semi-transparent bloody discharge (it's unclear if it is blood) coming from inside.
Over the past few days, I have also experienced noticeable pulling pain in the area near my navel when I exert myself slightly.
Should I seek medical attention for this? If so, which specialty should I consult? Thank you.

Steve, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/04/22

Dr. Liao Yaopan reply Family Medicine

Hello, based on your description, we strongly recommend that you seek an in-person evaluation by a general surgeon to confirm whether there are any serious underlying causes.
It is advisable to temporarily reduce your exercise regimen to avoid actions or positions that may increase abdominal pressure.
Please note that online consultations are not equivalent to an in-person visit and cannot provide direct diagnoses or treatment recommendations.

More Info

It sounds like you are experiencing some concerning symptoms following your intense abdominal workout. The presence of blood or blood-tinged discharge from the umbilical area, along with discomfort and pulling sensations, warrants careful consideration. Here’s a breakdown of what you might be dealing with and when to seek medical attention.

Understanding the Symptoms
1. Blood or Discharge: The appearance of dried blood or any discharge from the navel can indicate a few possibilities. It could be a result of irritation or injury to the skin or underlying tissues, especially after vigorous exercise. However, it could also suggest a more serious issue, such as an infection or a hernia.

2. Pain and Discomfort: The pulling sensation and pain you describe near the umbilical area could be due to muscle strain, especially if you engaged in exercises that heavily involved your core. However, if the pain is persistent or worsening, it could indicate a more serious condition, such as an umbilical hernia or even an abdominal wall injury.

When to Seek Medical Attention
You should consider seeking medical attention if you experience any of the following:
- Increased Pain: If the pain becomes severe or is accompanied by other symptoms like nausea or vomiting.

- Fever: A fever could indicate an infection, especially if there is any redness, swelling, or warmth around the navel.

- Changes in Discharge: If the discharge becomes more pronounced, changes color, or has a foul odor, this could be a sign of infection.

- Persistent Symptoms: If the symptoms do not improve or worsen over the next few days, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider.

Which Specialist to See
Given your symptoms, it would be appropriate to start with a visit to a primary care physician. They can perform an initial evaluation and determine if you need to see a specialist. If your doctor suspects a hernia or other abdominal issue, they may refer you to a surgeon or a gastroenterologist for further evaluation and treatment.

Additional Considerations
- Self-Care: In the meantime, avoid any activities that exacerbate the pain. Resting and applying a cold compress to the area may help reduce discomfort.

- Monitoring Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, including the amount and appearance of any discharge, as well as any new symptoms that may arise.

Conclusion
While it is possible that your symptoms are due to a minor issue related to your recent workout, the presence of blood and persistent pain should not be taken lightly. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to health concerns. Seeking medical attention will provide you with peace of mind and ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly.
