Chalazion on the lower eyelid?
Hello, doctor.
When I pull down my lower eyelid, I can see a small white bump, about the size of half a grain of rice, which looks like a chalazion.
It has actually been there for several years, and it is not painful or bothersome.
What can I do to remove it? Can I use an over-the-counter eyelid clamp to extract it? Thank you!
Zhang, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/04/24

Hello! Thank you for your question regarding the white bump on your lower eyelid. Based on your description, it sounds like you may be dealing with a condition known as a chalazion or a milia. Both of these conditions can present as small, white bumps on the eyelid, and while they are generally harmless, they can be bothersome.
A chalazion is a blockage of one of the oil glands in the eyelid, leading to a localized swelling. It often starts as a small, painless lump but can become red and swollen if it becomes inflamed. On the other hand, milia are small cysts that form when keratin becomes trapped beneath the surface of the skin. They are also typically painless and can appear anywhere on the skin, including the eyelids.
In your case, since the bump has been present for several years and is not causing any pain or discomfort, it is likely benign. However, if you are looking to remove it, there are a few options to consider:
1. Warm Compresses: Applying a warm compress to the area several times a day can help to soften the bump and may encourage it to drain on its own. This is often the first line of treatment for a chalazion.
2. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter eyelid scrubs or ointments may help if the bump is related to blocked oil glands. However, these treatments are more effective for mild cases and may not be sufficient for larger bumps.
3. Professional Removal: If the bump does not improve with home treatments and you find it bothersome, it is advisable to consult with an ophthalmologist or a dermatologist. They can assess the bump and may recommend a minor surgical procedure to remove it. This is typically done under local anesthesia and is a quick outpatient procedure.
4. Avoid DIY Methods: While you mentioned the possibility of using an eyelid clamp to remove the bump, I would strongly advise against this. Attempting to remove the bump yourself can lead to complications such as infection, scarring, or damage to the eyelid or surrounding tissues. It's always best to seek professional help for any procedures involving the eyes.
5. Monitoring: If the bump is not causing any issues, you may choose to simply monitor it. Regular check-ups with your eye doctor can help ensure that it does not change in size or appearance, which could indicate a need for further evaluation.
In summary, while the white bump on your lower eyelid is likely benign, if you wish to have it removed, the safest approach is to consult with a healthcare professional. They can provide you with the best options based on a thorough examination. Remember, your eye health is important, and it's always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to any concerns regarding your eyes. Thank you for your inquiry, and I hope this information helps you!
