Post-diarrheal conditions?
Hello, doctor.
I started experiencing diarrhea on the morning of April 26 and had a total of six episodes by the next day, April 27.
In the meantime, I went to the pharmacy and bought three over-the-counter medications.
On the 27th, I visited a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner who mentioned that the medication would include gastrointestinal-related remedies.
I have been eating white toast and congee until the evening of the 29th when I started having regular meals.
However, since the diarrhea, my bowel movements have been unusual; my stomach makes gurgling noises, and it feels like I haven't fully emptied my bowels.
On the 28th, when I used the toilet, most of what I expelled was gas and stool resembling sheep droppings.
For the past couple of days, I haven't had much bowel movement, mostly just passing gas, but the gurgling in my stomach has decreased.
I would like to ask the doctor if there are any methods to help resolve my situation.
I'm very concerned that there might be something wrong with my body.

If symptoms persist, further observation is recommended, and a consultation with a Western medicine practitioner should be sought.

It sounds like you are experiencing some distressing digestive symptoms following a bout of diarrhea. Based on your description, it appears that you had a significant episode of diarrhea, which can often lead to lingering gastrointestinal issues. After such an event, it is not uncommon to experience symptoms like abdominal rumbling, gas, and changes in bowel habits.
When you have diarrhea, your intestines can become irritated, and the normal balance of gut bacteria can be disrupted. This disruption can lead to symptoms such as bloating, gas, and the sensation of incomplete evacuation, which you are currently experiencing. The fact that you are passing mostly gas and experiencing a feeling of not having fully emptied your bowels is indicative of this irritation and imbalance.
Here are some steps you can take to help alleviate your symptoms and support your digestive health:
1. Stay Hydrated: After diarrhea, it’s crucial to replenish lost fluids and electrolytes. Drink plenty of water, and consider oral rehydration solutions that contain electrolytes to help restore balance.
2. Gradual Diet Reintroduction: Since you have already started with bland foods like white toast and rice porridge, continue this approach until your symptoms improve. Gradually reintroduce other foods, starting with low-fiber options and avoiding dairy, spicy foods, and high-fat meals until your digestive system stabilizes.
3. Probiotics: You mentioned that you have taken probiotics in the past, which can be beneficial in restoring the balance of gut bacteria. Consider reintroducing probiotics, either through supplements or fermented foods like yogurt (if tolerated), as they can help in recovery from diarrhea.
4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms and any foods that seem to exacerbate them. If you notice that certain foods consistently lead to discomfort, it may be best to avoid them temporarily.
5. Gentle Physical Activity: Light physical activity, such as walking, can help stimulate digestion and may alleviate some of the gas and bloating.
6. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If your symptoms persist for more than a few days, worsen, or if you experience additional symptoms such as fever, severe abdominal pain, or blood in your stool, it is essential to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can evaluate your condition and may recommend further tests or treatments.
7. Consider Dietary Adjustments: If you find that certain foods consistently cause discomfort, you may want to consider working with a dietitian who specializes in gastrointestinal health. They can help you identify potential food intolerances and create a personalized dietary plan.
In summary, while your symptoms following diarrhea are concerning, they are not uncommon. With proper hydration, a gradual reintroduction of foods, and possibly the use of probiotics, you should see improvement. However, do not hesitate to seek medical advice if your symptoms do not resolve or if you have any concerns about your health. Your digestive health is important, and addressing these issues early can help prevent further complications.
