Delayed menstruation?

Hello, doctor.
On February 20th, I had unprotected sexual intercourse but without ejaculation.
Within 48 hours, I took emergency contraception.
A week later, from February 28th to March 4th, I had my period, and then a week later, on March 9th, I had intercourse again, followed by my period on March 13th.
I took a pregnancy test on March 12th, which showed one line.
On March 20th, I had protected intercourse and everything was fine.
Then, on the night of April 1st and the morning of April 2nd, I had intercourse, and my period started on the morning of April 2nd, lasting until April 6th.
On the night of April 24th, I had protected intercourse, and I was expecting my period around April 30th.
I have been feeling symptoms like breast tenderness, but my period has not arrived yet.

Q: Is the delay in my period due to the emergency contraception I took earlier?
Q: What is the likelihood of pregnancy?
Q: Do I have to wait 7 days after my missed period to take a pregnancy test, or can I test before that?
Doctor, I am feeling a bit anxious and nervous, and I hope to receive a prompt response.
Thank you.

Hello, emergency contraception may cause irregular menstruation, but the chances of pregnancy should be low.
Wait for another week, and if your period still hasn't arrived, it is advisable to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

More Info

Understanding delayed menstruation can be a source of anxiety, especially when there are concerns about potential pregnancy. Based on the information you've provided, let's break down your situation and address your questions.

1. Causes of Delayed Menstruation: There are several reasons why your period may be delayed. Stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, and the use of emergency contraception (like the morning-after pill) can all affect your menstrual cycle. The emergency contraceptive pill can cause temporary disruptions in your cycle, leading to changes in the timing and flow of your period. Since you took the morning-after pill shortly after unprotected intercourse, it is possible that this has contributed to your irregular cycle.

2. Pregnancy Concerns: Given that you have had unprotected intercourse, there is always a possibility of pregnancy, even if you used emergency contraception. However, the fact that you had a negative pregnancy test on March 12 and then had your period shortly after suggests that you were not pregnant at that time. The subsequent sexual encounters, especially with condom use, further reduce the likelihood of pregnancy. However, no contraceptive method is 100% effective, and if the condom failed or was used incorrectly, there could still be a risk.

3. Timing of Pregnancy Tests: It is generally recommended to wait until at least the first day of your missed period to take a home pregnancy test for the most accurate result. However, many modern pregnancy tests can detect pregnancy a few days before your expected period. If you are experiencing symptoms such as breast tenderness, which you mentioned, it may be worth taking a test now, as some tests can provide reliable results even before a missed period.

4. Next Steps: If your period does not arrive soon, consider taking another pregnancy test. If it is positive, or if you continue to have concerns about your menstrual cycle or potential pregnancy, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider. They can offer further testing and guidance tailored to your situation.

5. Emotional Well-being: It’s completely normal to feel anxious in this situation. Delayed menstruation can be stressful, especially when combined with the uncertainties of sexual activity and contraception. It’s important to take care of your mental health during this time. Consider talking to someone you trust about your feelings or seeking support from a healthcare professional.

In summary, your delayed menstruation could be due to the emergency contraception you took, but it’s also important to rule out pregnancy. Taking a pregnancy test soon could provide clarity. If you have further concerns or if your period does not arrive, please reach out to a healthcare provider for personalized advice and support.
