Side Effects of Eye Medications: A Patient's Dilemma - Ophthalmology

Side effects of eye medications?

Recently, I have been experiencing severe eye allergies and used the eye drops prescribed by my doctor, which contain Antazoline HCl.
I specifically requested the doctor not to prescribe any antihistamine eye drops because I previously experienced dry eyes from using them.
The doctor explained that he couldn't avoid prescribing them.
I responded that antihistamines inherently cause dryness, but the doctor assessed that the Antazoline HCl drops would not lead to dry eyes.
He insisted that without using the prescribed medication, he couldn't provide an alternative treatment.
I was advised not to take information from the internet out of context.
Ultimately, I followed the doctor's advice, but unfortunately, I still experienced side effects, including dry eyes and burning sensations, which are quite uncomfortable.
Besides using artificial tears, are there any other methods to alleviate these side effects? I would prefer not to return for another consultation.

Hello,
I am not sure if Jemyn can cause dry eyes, as I have not used it before; however, this type of ingredient generally does not lead to dry eyes.
If dry eye symptoms do occur, artificial tears or steroid eye drops can be used to alleviate the condition.

In Taiwan, the ophthalmology department at Puzi Hospital is open on the following schedule:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and Wednesday from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM.

If necessary, it is important to seek medical attention at a healthcare facility.

I hope to have the opportunity to assist you.

When it comes to managing eye conditions and the medications prescribed for them, it’s crucial to understand both the intended effects and potential side effects of these treatments. In your case, you have been prescribed a medication called "杰敏" (Antazoline HCl), which is an antihistamine often used to relieve symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis. While antihistamines can be effective in reducing allergic reactions, they can also lead to side effects such as dry eyes, which you have experienced.

Understanding the Side Effects
Antazoline works by blocking histamine receptors, which helps alleviate symptoms like itching and redness in the eyes. However, one of the common side effects of antihistamines is dryness, as they can reduce tear production. This is particularly concerning for individuals who already suffer from dry eyes or have a history of using medications that exacerbate this condition.
Your experience of dryness and burning sensations after using the medication is not uncommon. It’s important to communicate these side effects to your healthcare provider, as they may need to adjust your treatment plan. While your doctor may have assessed that Antazoline would not cause significant dryness, individual responses to medications can vary widely.

Alternative Solutions for Dry Eyes
If you are experiencing dryness and discomfort from the medication, there are several strategies you can employ to alleviate these symptoms:
1. Artificial Tears: You mentioned using artificial tears, which is a great first step. Look for preservative-free options, as these are gentler on the eyes and can be used more frequently without the risk of irritation.

2. Warm Compresses: Applying a warm compress to your closed eyes can help stimulate tear production and provide relief from dryness. This can be done several times a day for about 10-15 minutes.

3. Humidifiers: If you are in a dry environment, using a humidifier can help maintain moisture in the air, which may alleviate dry eye symptoms.

4. Hydration: Ensure you are drinking enough water throughout the day. Staying hydrated can help maintain tear production.

5. Blinking Exercises: Sometimes, we forget to blink, especially when staring at screens. Make a conscious effort to blink more often, or practice the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

6. Avoiding Irritants: Try to avoid smoke, wind, and other irritants that can exacerbate dry eye symptoms. Wearing sunglasses outdoors can help protect your eyes from these elements.

7. Consulting an Eye Care Specialist: If your symptoms persist, it may be beneficial to consult with an eye care specialist. They can evaluate your condition more thoroughly and may suggest other treatments such as prescription eye drops specifically designed for dry eyes (e.g., cyclosporine A or lifitegrast).

When to Seek Further Help
If you find that your symptoms do not improve with these measures, or if they worsen, it’s important to seek medical advice. While it may feel inconvenient to return to your doctor, they can provide you with alternative medications or therapies that may be more suitable for your condition.

In summary, while Antazoline can be effective for allergic reactions, it can also lead to dryness, especially in sensitive individuals. Utilizing artificial tears, warm compresses, and maintaining a humid environment can help mitigate these side effects. Always keep an open line of communication with your healthcare provider regarding any adverse effects you experience, as they are best equipped to adjust your treatment plan accordingly.
