Blood in the stool?
Hello Doctor, during my workout this evening, I suddenly felt the urge to have a bowel movement.
However, there were no restrooms nearby, so I walked home to use the bathroom.
On the way, I felt the urge multiple times but held it in (the walk took about 10 minutes).
Once I got home, I rushed to the bathroom and noticed some bright red blood in the toilet before flushing, but it was not mixed with the stool.
Half an hour later, I felt the urge again, and this time there was some blood mixed with the stool (the colors were bright red and a bit dark red).
I would like to ask the doctor if my symptoms warrant a visit to the hospital.
Recently, my stools have been shaped like logs but somewhat loose, and they break apart shortly after hitting the water.
However, after taking probiotics, my stools returned to normal.
I wonder if there is a connection between the two.
Thank you for your response, Doctor.

This situation likely indicates a higher possibility of hemorrhoidal bleeding.
As long as there is no further bleeding, it should not be a concern.
It is recommended to avoid constipation during this period, shorten the time spent on the toilet, and increase the intake of dietary fiber, which can be helpful.
Warm sitz baths should also aid in alleviating symptoms.
Over-the-counter hemorrhoidal suppositories can be used, but it is best not to take stool softeners indiscriminately.
If taking probiotics improves symptoms, they can be continued.
However, if bleeding persists, it is advisable to consult a physician.
If necessary, a colonoscopy can be arranged.

When it comes to the presence of blood in stool, it is essential to understand the potential implications and when to seek medical attention. Blood in the stool can be alarming, and it is crucial to assess the situation carefully.
Based on your description, you experienced blood in your stool both before and after the bowel movement. The fact that you saw bright red blood initially, and then a mixture of blood with stool later, raises some concerns. Bright red blood typically indicates that the bleeding is occurring in the lower gastrointestinal tract, such as the rectum or anus, while darker blood can suggest bleeding from higher up in the digestive tract.
Given your symptoms, here are some considerations:
1. Severity of Symptoms: If you are experiencing significant pain, dizziness, or weakness, these could be signs of a more serious condition, and you should seek immediate medical attention.
2. Amount of Blood: If the amount of blood is substantial or if you notice it consistently in your stool, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. Even small amounts of blood should not be ignored, especially if it occurs repeatedly.
3. Associated Symptoms: You mentioned that your stool has been somewhat loose and has changed in shape. Changes in bowel habits, along with the presence of blood, can indicate underlying issues such as hemorrhoids, anal fissures, diverticulosis, or even more serious conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or colorectal cancer.
4. Dietary Factors: You noted that after consuming probiotics, your stool returned to normal. While probiotics can help restore gut flora and improve digestion, they do not necessarily address the underlying cause of bleeding. It is essential to consider whether any dietary changes or stressors could have contributed to your symptoms.
5. When to Seek Help: It is generally advisable to seek medical attention if you notice blood in your stool, especially if it is accompanied by other concerning symptoms or if it persists over several days. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, blood tests, and possibly imaging studies or a colonoscopy to determine the source of the bleeding.
In summary, while occasional minor bleeding may not always indicate a severe problem, the presence of blood in your stool warrants attention. It is best to err on the side of caution and consult a healthcare professional to rule out any serious conditions and to receive appropriate care. Your health is paramount, and timely intervention can make a significant difference in outcomes.
