Do antibiotics affect EEG (electroencephalogram) readings?

Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask if Amoxicillin 500mg and Welizen will affect the results of an EEG test? I have an EEG scheduled for tomorrow morning.
I visited an ENT specialist for other reasons, and they prescribed these two medications for me.
I'm concerned that they might impact the EEG results scheduled for 11 AM tomorrow.
I haven't taken either of these medications since 11 AM today.

Mr. Huang, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/05/10

Dr. Hong Weibin reply Neurology

Hello: Neither of these medications will affect the EEG results, so there is no need to worry.

When it comes to the potential effects of antibiotics like Amoxicillin and medications such as Welizen on EEG (electroencephalogram) results, it's important to understand both the pharmacological properties of these drugs and how they might interact with brain activity.

Amoxicillin is a widely used antibiotic that belongs to the penicillin class. It is primarily used to treat bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin infections, and urinary tract infections. Amoxicillin works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, leading to the death of the bacteria. Importantly, Amoxicillin does not have direct effects on the central nervous system (CNS) and is not known to alter brain wave patterns or EEG results significantly. Therefore, taking Amoxicillin should not affect your EEG results, especially since you have not taken it for several hours prior to the test.

On the other hand, Welizen is a medication that is often used to treat allergic conditions and may have some sedative properties. Depending on its active ingredients, Welizen can potentially influence CNS activity. If it contains antihistamines, for instance, these can cause sedation and might alter the EEG readings by affecting the overall alertness and brain wave patterns. However, the degree of influence would depend on the specific formulation of Welizen and the dosage taken.

Since you have not taken either medication since 11 AM today and your EEG is scheduled for 11 AM tomorrow, it is likely that any potential effects from these medications would have diminished by the time of your test. Most medications, especially those that do not have a long half-life, would be cleared from your system within 24 hours, particularly if they are not taken immediately before the EEG.

In general, for EEG tests, it is advisable to avoid any sedatives or medications that could alter your mental state or level of alertness right before the test. If you have concerns about specific medications, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider or the technician performing the EEG. They can provide guidance based on your medical history and the specific medications you are taking.

In conclusion, while Amoxicillin is unlikely to affect your EEG results, the impact of Welizen would depend on its specific formulation. Since you have not taken these medications for a significant period before your EEG, you should be in a good position for accurate results. Always communicate openly with your healthcare providers about any medications you are taking, especially when undergoing diagnostic tests.
