Questions related to chalazion surgery?

Hello, Doctor: I have chalazia on both the upper and lower eyelids of my left eye.
I would like to know if it is possible to remove them in one surgery, or if the upper and lower eyelids need to be done in two separate procedures.
A doctor I consulted previously mentioned that no one removes two at once, but I have seen online that some people have had them removed together, so I have some questions and would appreciate your clarification.
Thank you.

Dr. Cai Wenyuan reply Ophthalmology

Different areas should be treated separately.

Chalazion surgery is a common procedure performed to remove a chalazion, which is a cyst in the eyelid caused by a blocked oil gland. When it comes to the question of whether chalazion surgery can be performed on both eyelids at once, the answer is generally yes, but it depends on several factors including the surgeon's preference, the size and severity of the chalazia, and the patient's overall health.

In many cases, surgeons may opt to perform the surgery on both eyelids simultaneously, especially if both chalazia are relatively small and uncomplicated. This approach can be more convenient for the patient, as it reduces the need for multiple surgeries and anesthesia sessions. However, some surgeons may prefer to operate on one eyelid at a time to minimize potential complications and ensure better visibility and access during the procedure.
The decision to perform the surgery on one or both eyelids at once should be made in consultation with your ophthalmologist or eye surgeon. They will evaluate the specific characteristics of your chalazia, your medical history, and any other relevant factors before making a recommendation.
It is also important to consider the potential risks associated with chalazion surgery, which include infection, bleeding, scarring, and recurrence of the chalazion. While these risks are generally low, they can be more pronounced if both eyelids are operated on simultaneously, particularly if there are complications during the procedure.

In terms of recovery, patients can expect some swelling and discomfort following the surgery, regardless of whether one or both eyelids are treated. Ice packs and over-the-counter pain relievers are often recommended to help manage these symptoms. The healing process typically takes a few days to a week, during which patients should avoid wearing makeup and contact lenses to reduce the risk of infection.

If you have concerns about the surgery or the possibility of having both eyelids treated at once, it is crucial to discuss these with your surgeon. They can provide you with detailed information about the procedure, what to expect, and how to prepare for surgery.
In summary, chalazion surgery can often be performed on both eyelids at once, but the final decision should be made in consultation with your eye care professional. They will take into account your specific situation and help you weigh the benefits and risks of simultaneous surgery versus staged procedures. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare provider to ensure the best possible outcome for your eye health.
