Transient nasal congestion

Hello Doctor: For the past couple of days, my nose suddenly gets congested; sometimes it's partially blocked, and other times it's completely blocked.
However, after about ten minutes, it clears up on its own.
The first time it was partially blocked, it lasted longer, over half an hour, and this has happened 3 or 4 times, only in my left nostril.
I'm not sure what the cause is.
Yesterday, I picked my nose and noticed a bit of bleeding from the left side.
Today, I found a spot on the left side that feels a bit painful, but there's no swelling.
I'm wondering if the nasal congestion is related to this.

Hello, based on your description: There are many causes of nosebleeds, the most common being thin nasal mucosa, which can be caused by forceful nose blowing.
However, conditions such as nasopharyngeal or nasal cavity tumors (like nasopharyngeal carcinoma), sinusitis, fungal infections, allergic rhinitis, hypertension, coagulopathy, and nasal trauma can also lead to nosebleeds.
It is advisable to consult an otolaryngologist for examination.
If oral medication is ineffective, consideration can be given to cauterizing the frequently bleeding nasal vessels using medication or laser treatment.
As for nasal congestion, it may be caused by allergic rhinitis or other factors.
If symptoms persist, it is recommended to see an otolaryngologist for examination or to use treatments such as nasal sprays, oral medications, or nasal irrigation as appropriate.
Wishing you peace and good health.

Temporary nasal congestion can be a frustrating and uncomfortable experience, and understanding its causes is essential for effective management. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing intermittent nasal congestion, particularly on the left side, accompanied by some bleeding and localized pain. Let's explore the potential causes and concerns related to your symptoms.

Causes of Temporary Nasal Congestion
1. Allergic Rhinitis: One of the most common causes of nasal congestion is allergic rhinitis, which occurs when your immune system reacts to allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander. Symptoms can include sneezing, itching, and a runny or congested nose. If you have a history of allergies, this could be a contributing factor.

2. Vasomotor Rhinitis: This condition is characterized by nasal congestion that is not caused by allergies or infections. It can be triggered by environmental factors such as changes in temperature, humidity, or exposure to irritants like smoke or strong odors. Given that your symptoms have been intermittent, this could be a possibility.

3. Infections: Viral infections, such as the common cold, can lead to nasal congestion. If you have had other symptoms like a sore throat or cough, this might be the cause. Bacterial infections can also cause nasal congestion, often accompanied by thick nasal discharge and facial pain.

4. Nasal Polyps: These are noncancerous growths in the nasal passages that can lead to chronic congestion. They can develop as a result of chronic inflammation from allergies or infections.

5. Structural Issues: Conditions such as a deviated septum or enlarged turbinates can lead to persistent nasal congestion. If you have a history of nasal trauma or surgery, this could be relevant.

6. Nasal Trauma: You mentioned that you had some bleeding after picking your nose. This could indicate minor trauma to the nasal mucosa, which can lead to localized swelling and congestion. The pain you are experiencing could be a result of irritation or inflammation in the area.

Concerns and Recommendations
- Bleeding and Pain: The presence of blood and localized pain in your left nostril raises some concerns. While minor bleeding can occur from nasal trauma, persistent or recurrent bleeding should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. It is essential to ensure that there is no underlying issue, such as a more significant injury or infection.

- Duration and Frequency: Since your nasal congestion has been intermittent and self-resolving, it may not be a cause for immediate concern. However, if the symptoms persist, worsen, or are accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, facial swelling, or severe pain, it would be prudent to seek medical attention.

- Self-Care Measures: In the meantime, consider using saline nasal sprays to keep the nasal passages moist and reduce irritation. Avoid picking your nose, as this can exacerbate bleeding and irritation. Staying hydrated and using a humidifier can also help alleviate congestion.

- Consultation with a Specialist: If your symptoms continue or worsen, it would be advisable to consult an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including nasal endoscopy, to assess the nasal passages and identify any underlying issues.

In conclusion, while temporary nasal congestion can often be attributed to benign causes, your symptoms warrant careful consideration, especially with the presence of bleeding and pain. Monitoring your symptoms and seeking medical advice when necessary will help ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly.
