How to proactively maintain prostate health?

Hello, doctor.
Due to a family elder being diagnosed with prostate enlargement, accompanied by pain while walking, we are unsure if it is malignant.
However, considering their age, the younger family members believe that surgery may not be the best option for them.
This has led me to reflect on the importance of taking care of my health while I am still young.
After researching, I found that the prostate is involved in every ejaculation, and excessive masturbation may lead to prostate enlargement or changes.
However, I also came across responses from urologists stating that masturbation does not affect prostate enlargement.
Can excessive masturbation really increase the risk of prostate issues? Especially since I used to masturbate almost daily in my twenties, but now I do it very infrequently.
Thank you.

Hello: 1) Exercise and a healthy diet can help maintain prostate health.
2) DIY activities, if not excessive, should not affect the prostate, especially in relation to cancer.

The relationship between prostate health, masturbation, and prostate enlargement is a topic that often generates a lot of myths and misconceptions. To clarify, let's break down the facts surrounding these issues.

Firstly, it is important to understand what prostate enlargement, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is. BPH is a common condition in older men where the prostate gland enlarges, leading to urinary symptoms such as difficulty urinating, frequent urination, and a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying. This condition is not directly caused by masturbation. Research has shown that masturbation does not have a significant impact on the size of the prostate or the likelihood of developing BPH. In fact, some studies suggest that regular ejaculation, whether through sexual intercourse or masturbation, may actually have a protective effect against prostate cancer.

The concern that excessive masturbation could lead to prostate issues is largely unfounded. The prostate gland is designed to produce fluid that is a component of semen, and regular ejaculation can help maintain its health. There is no scientific evidence to support the idea that frequent masturbation leads to prostate enlargement or disease. In fact, some studies indicate that men who ejaculate more frequently may have a lower risk of prostate cancer.

However, it is essential to consider individual health factors. For instance, if a person has a pre-existing condition such as prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) or BPH, they may experience discomfort or exacerbation of symptoms with frequent ejaculation. In such cases, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider for personalized advice.

Regarding the concerns about aging and prostate health, it is true that as men age, the likelihood of developing prostate-related issues increases. This is a natural part of aging, and while lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and weight management can influence prostate health, the act of masturbation itself is not a contributing factor to prostate enlargement or disease.

In your case, since you mentioned that you used to masturbate frequently in your twenties and now do so infrequently, it is unlikely that this change in frequency has had a significant impact on your prostate health. The key is to maintain a healthy lifestyle, which includes regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and routine medical check-ups, especially as you age.

If there are concerns about prostate health, such as symptoms of BPH or prostatitis, it is crucial to seek medical advice. A healthcare provider can perform necessary evaluations, including digital rectal exams and PSA (prostate-specific antigen) tests, to assess prostate health and recommend appropriate treatment options if needed.

In summary, masturbation does not cause prostate enlargement or disease. Instead, it may play a role in maintaining prostate health. As with any health concern, it is best to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice and treatment options. Regular check-ups and being proactive about health can help manage and mitigate potential issues related to prostate health as one ages.
