Mild tingling sensation in the hands and feet?
Hello Doctor, yesterday while cleaning the mattress with 75% alcohol, I leaned in to check for any lingering odors and inadvertently inhaled a significant amount of alcohol.
A few minutes later, I began to experience shortness of breath, dizziness, and tingling in my hands and feet.
After stepping outside for fresh air, my condition started to improve, but I have since been experiencing intermittent mild tingling in my extremities.
Given the current severe pandemic situation, what would be the best course of action?
Da Wei, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/05/21

Hello Mr.
Dawei: You are experiencing dizziness and intermittent mild numbness in your hands and feet due to inhaling a significant amount of alcohol.
It is recommended to open the doors and windows for ventilation, take deep breaths, and drink plenty of plain water (at least 2500cc per day).
Relax and monitor your symptoms.
If the symptoms persist or worsen, please visit a nearby primary care clinic for evaluation by a physician.

In managing mild numbness in the hands and feet after inhaling alcohol, it is essential to understand the potential effects of alcohol inhalation and the body's response to it. Alcohol, particularly in high concentrations like 75%, can be irritating to the respiratory system and may lead to symptoms such as dizziness, shortness of breath, and numbness or tingling in the extremities. This is likely due to a combination of factors, including the direct effects of alcohol on the nervous system and the body's response to reduced oxygen levels during inhalation.
When you inhaled the alcohol, it could have led to a temporary state of hypoxia (reduced oxygen supply to the body), which can cause numbness and tingling sensations. The symptoms you experienced, such as dizziness and numbness, are not uncommon in cases of inhalation of irritants or toxic substances. Fortunately, it seems that stepping outside for fresh air helped alleviate your symptoms, which is a positive sign.
Here are some recommendations for managing your current condition:
1. Stay Hydrated: Ensure you drink plenty of water to help flush out any residual alcohol from your system. Hydration is crucial for recovery and can help alleviate symptoms.
2. Rest: Allow your body to recover by getting adequate rest. Avoid strenuous activities that could exacerbate your symptoms.
3. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms. If the numbness persists, worsens, or if you develop additional symptoms such as severe headaches, confusion, or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention promptly.
4. Avoid Further Exposure: Do not expose yourself to alcohol vapors or any other irritants. Ensure that you are in a well-ventilated area when using cleaning products.
5. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If the numbness continues or if you have concerns about your symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They may perform a physical examination and possibly recommend tests to rule out other underlying conditions.
6. Consider a Neurological Evaluation: If numbness persists beyond a few days, a referral to a neurologist may be warranted to assess for any nerve-related issues.
7. Practice Breathing Exercises: Engaging in deep breathing exercises can help improve oxygen flow and may alleviate some of the dizziness and numbness.
8. Avoid Alcohol: Given your recent experience, it may be wise to avoid alcohol consumption for a while to allow your body to recover fully.
In summary, while mild numbness in the hands and feet after alcohol inhalation can be concerning, it often resolves with proper care and monitoring. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, seeking medical advice is crucial to ensure there are no serious underlying issues. Always prioritize safety when using cleaning products, and ensure adequate ventilation to prevent similar incidents in the future.
