Genital issues
Hello doctor, I am 16 years old and in my first year of high school.
My penis measures only 11 centimeters.
Would taking testosterone before the end of puberty help increase its size? Additionally, my foreskin can be easily retracted when soft, but when erect, it becomes painful to pull back.
If I force it down to the corona, it feels like my penis is being constricted, and continuing to pull causes pain at the base.
Do I need a circumcision?

Dr. Chen Jiansheng reply Urology
A foreskin length of approximately 11 centimeters can affect erection.
Surgical circumcision may be performed as a treatment.

When it comes to concerns about genital health, particularly regarding hormone therapy and circumcision options, it's important to approach the topic with a comprehensive understanding of human development and medical practices.
Firstly, regarding your question about the potential for hormone therapy to increase penis size, it's crucial to note that the penis typically reaches its full size during puberty, which can vary significantly among individuals. The average penis size for adult males is around 5 to 6 inches when erect, but there is a wide range of normal sizes. Hormone therapy, particularly with testosterone, can influence growth during puberty, but it is not guaranteed to increase size significantly, especially if the growth plates have already closed. If you are still in puberty, your body may still have the potential for growth, and introducing hormones could potentially affect your development, but this should only be done under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
Now, regarding your concerns about your foreskin, it sounds like you may be experiencing a condition known as phimosis, where the foreskin cannot be easily retracted over the glans (the head of the penis) when the penis is erect. This can cause discomfort and pain, as you've described. In some cases, phimosis can resolve on its own as you continue to grow and develop, but if it causes significant pain or interferes with urination or sexual activity, it may be advisable to consider treatment options.
Circumcision is one option that can resolve phimosis, but it is not the only one. Many healthcare providers recommend conservative treatments first, such as topical steroid creams that can help to loosen the foreskin and make it easier to retract. Stretching exercises may also be suggested to gradually increase the elasticity of the foreskin. If these methods do not provide relief or if the condition is severe, circumcision may be considered.
It's essential to discuss your symptoms and concerns with a healthcare provider who can assess your situation more thoroughly. They can provide guidance on whether circumcision is necessary or if other treatments may be more appropriate. Additionally, they can help you understand the implications of hormone therapy and whether it is suitable for you at this stage in your development.
In summary, while hormone therapy may have some effects on growth during puberty, it is not a guaranteed method for increasing penis size. Regarding your foreskin issues, there are non-surgical options to consider before deciding on circumcision. Always consult with a qualified healthcare professional to explore your options and make informed decisions about your health.
