Respiratory issues

Hello, doctor.
I have had difficulty breathing since middle school, often needing to take very deep breaths or yawn to relieve the sensation.
I previously saw a doctor when I was quite overweight, measuring 158 cm and weighing 67 kg.
The doctor advised me to exercise more and smoke less, stating that it wasn't a major issue.
However, I have now lost weight and am down to 58 kg, yet I am still troubled by this problem.
I do not experience significant stress, but I do have symptoms of nasal allergies.
I would like to know which specialty you would recommend I see.

Ms. Hsu, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/05/30

Hello Ms.
Hsu: Regarding your long-standing respiratory issues, you should have undergone some examinations previously, and the results should not indicate any major concerns, right? If follow-up or further testing is necessary, I recommend visiting a pulmonology clinic, which should help address or alleviate your concerns.
Thank you for your inquiry, and I wish you good health and well-being! Dr.

Breathing difficulties can be a concerning issue, and it's important to approach this matter with the right medical guidance. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing significant challenges with your breathing since middle school, requiring you to exert considerable effort to inhale properly. Additionally, you mentioned having a history of nasal allergies, which could be contributing to your symptoms.

Given your situation, the first specialist you should consider consulting is an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist, also known as an otolaryngologist. ENT specialists are trained to diagnose and treat conditions related to the nasal passages, sinuses, throat, and ears. Since you have symptoms of nasal allergies, an ENT can evaluate your nasal passages for any obstructions, inflammation, or other issues that may be affecting your ability to breathe comfortably. They can also provide treatments for allergies, such as antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids, which may alleviate your symptoms.

In addition to seeing an ENT, it may also be beneficial to consult a pulmonologist, a specialist in lung and respiratory conditions. A pulmonologist can conduct a thorough evaluation of your lung function through tests such as spirometry, which measures how much air you can inhale and exhale, and how quickly you can do so. This can help determine if there are any underlying respiratory conditions, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), that may be contributing to your breathing difficulties.

Since you mentioned a history of being overweight and now being at a lower weight, it’s also important to consider lifestyle factors that may impact your respiratory health. Maintaining a healthy weight is beneficial for overall health, including respiratory function. Regular physical activity can improve lung capacity and efficiency, so incorporating exercise into your routine, as previously suggested by your doctor, can be helpful. However, it’s crucial to ensure that any exercise regimen is appropriate for your current health status and does not exacerbate your breathing issues.

Furthermore, if you experience anxiety or stress related to your breathing difficulties, it may be worthwhile to speak with a mental health professional. Anxiety can sometimes manifest as physical symptoms, including shortness of breath, and addressing any underlying psychological factors can be an important part of your overall treatment plan.

In summary, I recommend starting with an ENT specialist to address your nasal allergy symptoms and evaluate any potential obstructions or inflammation in your nasal passages. Following that, a consultation with a pulmonologist can help assess your lung function and rule out any respiratory conditions. Additionally, consider lifestyle modifications, including regular exercise and stress management techniques, to support your respiratory health. If your symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to seek further medical attention. Your health and well-being are paramount, and finding the right specialists can help you manage your breathing difficulties effectively.
