Respiratory issues
Hello, in the past two weeks, I have suddenly felt something unusual while breathing.
It's not wheezing, there's no chest pain, and I can breathe normally, but occasionally I feel a sensation in my throat or chest (like a slight vibration?).
Other than that, I have no significant issues, except for shoulder and neck pain (probably due to poor breastfeeding posture) and some stomach discomfort last month (the doctor said it might be related to autonomic nervous system issues...).
I would like to ask what could be the cause of my unusual breathing? Last year, I had a chest X-ray during a health check, and it showed no abnormalities.
Under what circumstances should I seek medical attention? Thank you!

More Info
When experiencing unusual breathing sensations, it is essential to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical advice. Based on your description, you are not experiencing typical symptoms of respiratory distress, such as wheezing, chest pain, or shortness of breath. Instead, you mention a peculiar sensation in your throat or chest during breathing, which could be attributed to various factors.
Possible Causes of Unusual Breathing Sensations
1. Muscle Tension: Given your mention of neck and shoulder pain, it is possible that muscle tension is contributing to your breathing sensations. Poor posture, especially during activities like nursing, can lead to tightness in the neck and upper back, which may affect how you perceive your breathing.
2. Anxiety and Stress: Anxiety can manifest in physical symptoms, including changes in breathing patterns. If you are feeling stressed or anxious, this could lead to sensations of tightness or discomfort in the chest or throat, even if you are not experiencing a full-blown panic attack.
3. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): You mentioned experiencing gastric discomfort recently. GERD can cause sensations of tightness in the throat or chest, often described as a lump in the throat or a feeling of pressure. This can occur due to acid irritating the esophagus, which may also affect your breathing sensations.
4. Allergies or Respiratory Conditions: Although your previous chest X-ray was normal, allergies or mild respiratory conditions can lead to sensations of tightness or discomfort in the throat or chest. This could be due to post-nasal drip or irritation of the airways.
5. Neurological Factors: Sometimes, sensations in the chest or throat can be related to nerve irritation or dysfunction, which may not be immediately apparent through imaging studies.
When to Seek Medical Advice
While many of these causes are benign, there are specific situations where you should seek medical attention:
- Persistent Symptoms: If the unusual breathing sensations persist for more than a few weeks or worsen over time, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional.
- Accompanying Symptoms: If you experience additional symptoms such as significant chest pain, severe shortness of breath, dizziness, or fainting, you should seek immediate medical attention.
- Changes in Breathing Patterns: If you notice a significant change in your breathing patterns, such as increased difficulty in breathing or a feeling of suffocation, it is crucial to get evaluated.
- Impact on Daily Life: If these sensations are affecting your ability to perform daily activities or causing significant anxiety, it is worth discussing with a healthcare provider.
Conclusion
In summary, while your symptoms may not indicate a severe underlying condition, it is essential to monitor them closely. Given your history of neck pain and recent gastrointestinal discomfort, these could be contributing factors. If your symptoms persist or worsen, or if you develop new symptoms, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. A thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional can help determine the underlying cause and guide appropriate management. Remember, your health and peace of mind are paramount, and it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to unusual symptoms.
