Tonsils of uneven size and enlarged?
Since mid-April, I have been experiencing a cold with a sore throat.
I did not take any medication and waited for self-healing.
After the symptoms subsided, I still felt a sensation of something stuck in my throat, and sometimes I experienced a burning sensation.
I consulted an otolaryngologist; the first doctor suggested it might be due to gastroesophageal reflux and prescribed medication, but the symptoms persisted after finishing the medication.
I then saw a second doctor who performed a CT scan of the nasopharynx and noted that one side was enlarged but found nothing concerning.
The doctor prescribed medication, which I have been taking until now.
Recently, I noticed that sometimes my throat feels like there is something stuck, as if a food particle is lodged in the left tonsil.
I took a look myself and noticed that the tonsils appear asymmetrical, with the right side seeming larger.
Is this normal? Thank you.

Hello,
Upon initial examination, there appears to be little difference between the bilateral tonsils.
If there is no significant pain or discharge, the sensation of something stuck in the throat is often associated with chronic tonsillitis or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
It is recommended to drink plenty of water, gargle frequently, and reduce the intake of spicy foods or beverages.
If symptoms persist without improvement, a follow-up consultation is advised.
Wishing you safety and health,
Dr.

When it comes to the question of uneven tonsil size, it is important to understand that variations in tonsil size can be quite common and may not always indicate a serious health issue. The tonsils are part of the lymphatic system and play a role in immune function, particularly in young children. They can vary in size due to a number of factors, including infections, allergies, and even anatomical differences.
In your case, you mentioned experiencing a sore throat and a sensation of something being stuck in your throat after a cold. This could be related to several factors, including post-nasal drip, inflammation, or even gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which can cause throat irritation and discomfort. The fact that you have seen two different ENT specialists and had a CT scan that did not reveal any concerning findings is reassuring. It suggests that there is likely no significant pathology present.
The observation that one tonsil appears larger than the other can be attributed to several benign reasons. For instance, one tonsil may be more reactive due to previous infections or inflammation, which can cause it to swell. This is often seen in cases of chronic tonsillitis or recurrent throat infections. In some instances, the tonsils can also develop crypts or pockets where food particles and bacteria can accumulate, leading to a sensation of something being stuck.
While it is normal for tonsils to vary in size, it is essential to monitor any accompanying symptoms. If you experience persistent discomfort, difficulty swallowing, or any other concerning symptoms, it would be prudent to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further evaluation or treatment options based on your specific symptoms and medical history.
In terms of what you can do about it, here are a few suggestions:
1. Hydration: Ensure you are drinking plenty of fluids. Staying hydrated can help soothe throat irritation and may alleviate the sensation of something being stuck.
2. Gargling Salt Water: Gargling with warm salt water can help reduce inflammation and discomfort in the throat.
3. Avoid Irritants: Try to avoid smoking, secondhand smoke, and other irritants that can exacerbate throat discomfort.
4. Dietary Adjustments: If you suspect that acid reflux may be contributing to your symptoms, consider dietary changes that can help manage GERD, such as avoiding spicy foods, caffeine, and large meals before bedtime.
5. Follow-Up: Since you have already consulted with specialists, it is important to keep them informed of any changes in your symptoms. If the sensation of something stuck in your throat persists or worsens, further evaluation may be necessary.
In conclusion, while uneven tonsil size can be normal, it is essential to remain vigilant about any accompanying symptoms. Given your history of throat discomfort and the findings from your recent evaluations, it is advisable to maintain open communication with your healthcare providers to ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly.
