Numbness in the dorsum of the foot?

In the past few days, I have experienced numbness in the dorsum of my left foot, but there is no pain.
Recently, I have been practicing yoga at home, including poses such as Cow Face Pose, Baddha Konasana (Bound Angle Pose), and seated forward bends, which involve hip activities.
Could this be the reason for my foot numbness? Additionally, how can I alleviate this symptom?

Dear Ms.
Wang,
Based on your description, we need to consider two issues: symptoms related to nerve compression from a herniated disc or compression of the peroneal nerve.
A herniated disc can also occur due to sudden injuries, such as twisting the waist abruptly or experiencing excessive force suddenly.
If a herniated disc occurs, it may cause localized inflammatory responses leading to back pain and nerve root compression, which can result in numbness and pain radiating to one side of the lower limb.
When you practice yoga or cross your legs, the pressure applied to the outer part of the calf can easily compress the peroneal nerve, leading to nerve inflammation and symptoms such as numbness, pain, and tingling on the lateral side of the calf and dorsum of the foot.

I recommend that you visit a neurology clinic for further evaluation (nerve conduction studies).
However, due to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases, it is advisable to wait until the situation stabilizes before going to the hospital for examination.
Please ensure to implement self-protection measures, including cleaning and disinfecting, and adhere to the new preventive health practices before and after your medical visit.
Thank you for your inquiry, and feel free to discuss any related questions further! Wishing you good health and peace.
Sincerely,
Dr.

Numbness in the top of your foot can be concerning, especially if it is a new symptom. There are several potential causes for this sensation, and understanding them can help you determine the best course of action for relief.

One common cause of numbness in the foot is nerve compression. This can occur due to various factors, including tight footwear, prolonged sitting or standing, or specific physical activities that may put pressure on the nerves. In your case, the yoga poses you mentioned, such as the cow face pose (gomukhasana), the clam pose (baddha konasana), and forward bends, could potentially lead to temporary nerve compression if they are not performed with proper alignment or if they place undue stress on the lower extremities.

Another possible cause of numbness in the foot is a condition known as tarsal tunnel syndrome. This occurs when the posterior tibial nerve, which runs along the inside of the ankle, becomes compressed as it passes through the tarsal tunnel. Symptoms can include numbness, tingling, or a burning sensation in the foot, particularly in the arch and toes. Activities that involve repetitive ankle movements or prolonged pressure on the ankle can exacerbate this condition.

Additionally, issues related to circulation, such as peripheral artery disease, can also lead to numbness in the feet. If blood flow is restricted, it can result in a tingling or numb sensation. However, this is less likely if you are otherwise healthy and active.

To alleviate the numbness you are experiencing, consider the following strategies:
1. Modify Your Yoga Practice: Pay attention to your body during yoga. Ensure that you are not overextending or putting excessive pressure on your feet. You might want to consult a yoga instructor to ensure that your form is correct and that you are not inadvertently compressing nerves.

2. Footwear: Evaluate your footwear. Shoes that are too tight or do not provide adequate support can contribute to numbness. Opt for shoes that fit well and provide good arch support.

3. Stretching and Strengthening: Incorporate stretching and strengthening exercises for your feet and ankles into your routine. This can help improve circulation and relieve any tension that may be contributing to nerve compression.

4. Rest and Elevation: If you notice numbness after certain activities, give your feet a break. Resting and elevating your feet can help reduce swelling and improve circulation.

5. Heat Therapy: Applying heat to the affected area can help relax tight muscles and improve blood flow, potentially alleviating numbness.

6. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If the numbness persists or worsens, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They can perform a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly imaging studies, to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.

In summary, while your recent yoga practice may contribute to the numbness in your foot, it is essential to consider other potential causes, such as nerve compression or circulation issues. By modifying your activities, ensuring proper footwear, and incorporating stretching and strengthening exercises, you may find relief from the numbness. However, if the symptoms continue, seeking professional medical advice is crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment.
