Sexual dysfunction
Hello, doctor.
I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism in May 2021, and around the same time, I started experiencing erectile dysfunction and a lack of morning erections.
I then began taking medication for hyperthyroidism and Concor 5mg for treatment.
Could you please tell me if the erectile dysfunction is caused by hyperthyroidism or by Concor? If I want to treat hyperthyroidism without affecting my sexual function, should I switch from Concor to another heart medication, or should I continue taking Concor and also take medications like Cialis? Thank you.
Xiao Chen, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/06/09
Dr. Fu Shizhang reply Urology
Indeed, some blood pressure medications may cause erectile dysfunction, but this is generally uncommon with Candesartan.
If you wish to treat erectile dysfunction, it is recommended to visit a urology clinic.
Online consultations cannot replace an in-person evaluation and physical examination by a physician.
If there are underlying health issues, it is still advisable to seek care at a medical facility.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) can be a complex condition influenced by various physiological and psychological factors. In your case, you have been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, which can indeed have an impact on sexual function. Hyperthyroidism, characterized by an overproduction of thyroid hormones, can lead to a range of symptoms, including increased heart rate, anxiety, and changes in libido, all of which can contribute to erectile dysfunction.
The relationship between hyperthyroidism and erectile dysfunction is primarily linked to hormonal imbalances. Thyroid hormones play a crucial role in regulating metabolism and can influence the levels of sex hormones, such as testosterone. An excess of thyroid hormones can lead to a decrease in testosterone levels, which is essential for maintaining sexual function. Additionally, hyperthyroidism can cause psychological symptoms such as anxiety and irritability, which can further exacerbate erectile dysfunction.
Regarding the medication you are taking, it is important to note that the drug "Kankun" (likely referring to a beta-blocker, such as propranolol) can also have side effects that may contribute to erectile dysfunction. Beta-blockers are commonly prescribed to manage symptoms of hyperthyroidism, such as rapid heart rate and anxiety. While they are effective in controlling these symptoms, they can sometimes lead to sexual side effects, including difficulties in achieving or maintaining an erection.
To address your concerns about managing hyperthyroidism while minimizing the impact on sexual function, it is essential to have an open discussion with your healthcare provider. They can assess your specific situation and may consider adjusting your medication regimen. For instance, some beta-blockers are known to have a lower incidence of sexual side effects, and your doctor might suggest switching to one of these alternatives.
Additionally, if you are considering using medications like sildenafil (commonly known as Viagra) to help with erectile dysfunction, it is crucial to consult with your doctor first. They can evaluate whether it is safe for you to use these medications in conjunction with your current treatment for hyperthyroidism. In some cases, using ED medications can be effective, but they must be prescribed with caution, especially if you are on other medications that can affect blood pressure or heart function.
In summary, both hyperthyroidism and the medications used to treat it can contribute to erectile dysfunction. It is vital to work closely with your healthcare provider to find a treatment plan that effectively manages your hyperthyroidism while also addressing any sexual health concerns. Regular follow-ups and open communication about your symptoms and treatment responses will help ensure that you receive the best care tailored to your needs.
