Date of conception

Hello doctor, due to irregular menstrual cycles, I confirmed my pregnancy with a test on August 31.
An abdominal ultrasound on September 5 showed a gestational sac at 5 weeks.
I would like to inquire about the approximate date of conception.
Is it possible that it was in early July?

Cc, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/06/10

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, it should not be the case.
Wishing you good health.

Estimating the conception date can be challenging, especially for individuals with irregular menstrual cycles. In your case, since you confirmed your pregnancy on August 31 and the ultrasound indicated a gestational age of approximately 5 weeks on September 5, we can use this information to estimate your conception date.

Typically, a gestational age of 5 weeks means that the conception likely occurred around 3 weeks prior to the ultrasound date. Since the ultrasound was performed on September 5, this would place the estimated conception date around mid-August. More specifically, if we consider that conception usually occurs about 2 weeks after the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP), we can further refine our estimate.

For women with regular cycles, the LMP is often used as a reference point. However, since you mentioned irregular cycles, this method may not be as accurate. If we assume that your last menstrual period occurred sometime in late July or early August, it is plausible that conception could have occurred in early to mid-August.
To address your specific question about whether conception could have occurred in early July, it is less likely given the timing of your ultrasound and the gestational age. If you had a typical 28-day cycle, ovulation (and thus conception) would generally occur about 14 days after the start of your last period. If your last period was in late July, conception in early August aligns more closely with the ultrasound findings.

In summary, based on the information provided, the estimated conception date is likely in mid-August rather than early July. However, it is essential to remember that individual cycles can vary significantly, and factors such as stress, health, and hormonal changes can affect ovulation timing.
If you have further questions or concerns about your pregnancy or menstrual cycle, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. They can offer personalized insights based on your medical history and current situation. Additionally, if you are tracking your cycles for future pregnancies, consider using ovulation predictor kits or fertility tracking apps, which can help provide a clearer picture of your ovulation patterns.
