Black spots on nails

I accidentally discovered two dark purple spots in my toenail, surrounded by a brownish color.
I'm not sure if it's a fungal nail infection or due to other reasons.

Hello: Due to the insufficient resolution of online photos, it is not possible to accurately diagnose skin diseases.
Nail discoloration may be caused by a fungal infection leading to onychomycosis, trauma resulting in subungual hematoma, or conditions such as melanonychia or melanoma.
It is recommended to consult a nearby dermatologist for diagnosis and treatment.
Thank you!

More Info

When you notice black spots or discoloration on your toenails, it can be concerning, and it's important to understand the potential causes and implications. The appearance of black or dark purple spots on toenails can arise from various factors, and distinguishing between them is crucial for appropriate management.

Possible Causes of Black Spots on Toenails
1. Trauma or Injury: One of the most common reasons for black spots under the toenails is trauma. If you have recently stubbed your toe or dropped something heavy on it, the blood vessels under the nail can break, leading to a bruise that appears as a dark spot. This is often accompanied by pain and swelling.

2. Fungal Infections: Conditions like onychomycosis (fungal nail infection) can cause discoloration of the nails. While fungal infections typically lead to yellow or white discoloration, they can sometimes present with dark spots, especially if there is a secondary bacterial infection.

3. Melanonychia: This condition refers to the presence of a brown or black stripe on the nail, which can be caused by increased melanin production. It can be benign or a sign of more serious conditions, including melanoma, especially if the discoloration is new, changing, or accompanied by other symptoms.

4. Nail Psoriasis: Psoriasis can affect the nails, leading to pitting, discoloration, and sometimes the appearance of dark spots. This is usually associated with other symptoms of psoriasis on the skin.

5. Systemic Conditions: Certain systemic conditions, such as diabetes or peripheral vascular disease, can lead to changes in nail color and texture. If you have underlying health issues, this could be a contributing factor.

6. Subungual Hematoma: This is a collection of blood under the nail due to trauma, which can appear as a dark spot. If the area is painful and the discoloration is extensive, it may require medical intervention.

When to Seek Medical Attention
If you notice black spots on your toenails, it is essential to monitor the situation closely. Here are some guidelines on when to seek medical attention:
- Persistent Changes: If the discoloration persists for more than a few weeks without improvement.

- Accompanied Symptoms: If you experience pain, swelling, or any other concerning symptoms.

- Changes in Nail Structure: If the nail begins to lift, crumble, or change shape.

- Family History of Skin Cancer: If you have a family history of melanoma or other skin cancers, it is prudent to have any new or changing nail discolorations evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Diagnosis and Treatment
A healthcare provider will typically conduct a physical examination and may ask about your medical history, recent injuries, and any other symptoms. In some cases, they may perform a biopsy or other tests to determine the cause of the discoloration.
Treatment will depend on the underlying cause. If it is due to trauma, the nail may simply need time to grow out. Fungal infections may require antifungal medications, while more serious conditions like melanoma will necessitate a different approach, potentially including surgical intervention.

Conclusion
In summary, while black spots on toenails can be benign and related to trauma or fungal infections, they can also indicate more serious conditions. It is essential to monitor the spots for changes and consult a healthcare professional if you have any concerns. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to managing any potential issues effectively.
