Brown discharge from the vagina?

I haven't gotten my period yet.
Last summer, I visited a gynecologist, and the doctor mentioned that my vulva was swollen (I'm not sure if this is related).
Today, I noticed that my vaginal discharge has turned brown, and there are some dark brown, skin-like substances coming out.
I also experience a stinging sensation when urinating.
What could be the possible symptoms? 🥺

Ling, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/06/14

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, based on your symptom description, it is more likely that you are experiencing contact dermatitis or vulvar abrasion.
It is recommended to keep the perineal area clean and dry, avoid tight clothing, and refrain from vigorous rubbing.
You may soak in a bath to alleviate symptoms.
If symptoms persist, please consult a physician for diagnosis and treatment.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Chang.

More Info

Brown vaginal discharge can be concerning, especially when accompanied by symptoms such as pain during urination. Understanding the potential causes and symptoms is crucial for determining the appropriate course of action.

Causes of Brown Vaginal Discharge
1. Menstrual Cycle: Brown discharge often occurs at the beginning or end of a menstrual period. It is typically old blood that takes longer to exit the body, which can appear brown rather than bright red.

2. Ovulation: Some women experience spotting during ovulation, which can also present as brown discharge.

3. Pregnancy: Implantation bleeding, which occurs when a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining, can cause brown discharge. However, if you suspect pregnancy, it is essential to take a pregnancy test.

4. Infections: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia or gonorrhea can lead to unusual discharge, including brown discharge. Other infections, such as bacterial vaginosis or yeast infections, may also cause changes in discharge color and consistency.

5. Hormonal Imbalances: Conditions that affect hormone levels, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders, can lead to irregular bleeding and discharge.

6. Cervical or Uterine Issues: Conditions such as cervical polyps, fibroids, or endometriosis can cause abnormal discharge and pain.

Symptoms to Watch For
- Pain during urination: This could indicate a urinary tract infection (UTI) or an STI. Painful urination is often accompanied by a burning sensation and may require medical evaluation.

- Abdominal or pelvic pain: This can indicate a more serious condition, such as an ectopic pregnancy or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).

- Foul-smelling discharge: A strong odor can indicate an infection that requires treatment.

- Itching or irritation: This may suggest a yeast infection or other types of infections.

Recommended Actions
Given your symptoms of brown discharge, pain during urination, and previous concerns regarding swelling in the vulvar area, it is essential to seek medical attention. Here are some steps you should consider:
1. Visit a Healthcare Provider: Schedule an appointment with a gynecologist or a healthcare provider who specializes in women's health. They can perform a thorough examination, including a pelvic exam, and may conduct tests to determine the cause of your symptoms.

2. Keep Track of Symptoms: Note any additional symptoms you experience, such as changes in discharge color, consistency, or odor, as well as any pain or discomfort. This information can help your healthcare provider make a more accurate diagnosis.

3. Avoid Self-Diagnosis: While it can be tempting to search for answers online, self-diagnosing can lead to unnecessary anxiety or mismanagement of your health. A healthcare professional can provide a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

4. Stay Hydrated: If you are experiencing pain during urination, it may be tempting to reduce fluid intake. However, staying hydrated is essential for urinary health. Drinking plenty of water can help dilute urine and may alleviate some discomfort.

5. Avoid Irritants: Until you see a healthcare provider, avoid using scented products, douches, or other potential irritants in the vaginal area, as these can exacerbate symptoms.

In conclusion, brown vaginal discharge accompanied by pain during urination can arise from various causes, ranging from normal menstrual changes to infections or other medical conditions. It is crucial to consult a healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Your health and well-being are paramount, and timely medical intervention can help address any underlying issues effectively.
