Shortness of breath?

Hello doctor, I would like to ask about something.
Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic became severe in Taiwan, I have been experiencing feelings I have never felt before, whether it's psychological or due to actually contracting the virus.
Recently, I have been paying close attention to my breathing, feeling as if I am not getting enough air.
At the same time, I have been experiencing palpitations, cold hands and feet, sweating, and occasional chest tightness.
These symptoms have been present for about one to two weeks.
I have a history of nasal allergies and am taking medication for it, but I still experience nasal congestion.
Sometimes, when I am engaged in other activities, I do not feel this way, but once I think about the pandemic, I start to doubt whether I have contracted COVID-19, especially since I recently saw a celebrity with symptoms similar to mine.
I have not had any known exposure or contact history and have not been identified as a close contact.
I am also hesitant to go to the hospital for a rapid test for fear of being told I am wasting medical resources.
Therefore, I would like to consult with you, doctor, about what kind of condition I might be experiencing.

Min, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/06/14

Dr. Zhang Youzheng reply Pulmonology

Hello: Based on your description, it seems that you are indeed quite anxious.
I recommend that you take some time to relax.
You can monitor your temperature daily to check for any signs of infection.
However, if you continue to have symptoms and feel uneasy, you can visit a pulmonology clinic for follow-up examinations to address your concerns.

It's understandable to feel anxious and concerned about your health, especially in light of the ongoing pandemic and its impact on mental well-being. Your symptoms of breathing difficulties, palpitations, cold extremities, sweating, and chest tightness can be distressing, and it's important to address both the physical and psychological aspects of these experiences.

From a medical perspective, the symptoms you describe could indeed be linked to anxiety, particularly in the context of heightened stress due to the pandemic. Anxiety can manifest in various physical symptoms, including shortness of breath, chest tightness, and palpitations. This is often referred to as "psychophysiological" symptoms, where emotional distress translates into physical sensations. The mind and body are closely connected, and anxiety can lead to hypervigilance about bodily sensations, causing you to focus excessively on your breathing and other physical symptoms.

Your history of allergic rhinitis may also contribute to your breathing difficulties. Allergies can cause nasal congestion, which can lead to a sensation of not getting enough air, especially if you're experiencing anxiety. When you're anxious, your breathing patterns may change, leading to shallow or rapid breathing, which can exacerbate feelings of breathlessness. It's worth noting that while allergic reactions can cause discomfort, they typically do not lead to the severe symptoms associated with COVID-19, especially if you have no known exposure.

It's important to consider that the fear of contracting COVID-19 can amplify anxiety symptoms. Many people have experienced increased anxiety during the pandemic, leading to a cycle of worry and physical symptoms. This is a common response and does not necessarily indicate that you have contracted the virus. If you are feeling overwhelmed by these thoughts, it may be helpful to engage in grounding techniques or mindfulness practices to help redirect your focus away from anxiety-provoking thoughts.

If your symptoms persist or worsen, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation. A healthcare professional can help determine whether there are any underlying health issues that need to be addressed. They may recommend tests to rule out any physical causes for your symptoms, such as a respiratory condition or cardiovascular issues. Additionally, they can provide guidance on managing anxiety, which may include therapy, medication, or lifestyle changes.

In the meantime, consider implementing some self-care strategies to help manage your anxiety and improve your overall well-being. Regular physical activity, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, yoga, or meditation can be beneficial. Staying connected with friends and family, even virtually, can also provide emotional support during these challenging times.

In summary, while your symptoms may be concerning, they are likely related to anxiety exacerbated by the stress of the pandemic and your existing allergies. Seeking professional help can provide clarity and support in managing both your physical and emotional health. Remember, you are not alone in this experience, and there are resources available to help you navigate these challenges.
