Nasal discharge with blood?
Hello Doctor, earlier this year, I had a few episodes of nasal discharge with blood and bloody crusts.
After visiting the doctor several times, I was told that it appeared to be a wound and was given some ointment.
It took a few weeks to heal, but recently, the symptoms of bloody nasal discharge have reappeared.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, I have been hesitant to see a doctor.
Could you please advise me on what this situation might be?

Hello: It is common to experience bleeding from the nasal mucosa due to a ruptured nasal septum.
If the bleeding persists or does not improve, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation for confirmation.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Understanding blood-streaked nasal discharge can be concerning, especially when it recurs after a previous episode. Based on your description, it seems you have experienced nasal bleeding that has been attributed to a wound in the nasal mucosa. This is a common issue, and there are several potential causes and considerations to keep in mind.
Firstly, the nasal cavity is lined with a delicate mucous membrane that can easily become irritated or damaged. Common causes of blood-streaked nasal discharge include:
1. Dry Air: In many cases, especially during winter months or in dry climates, the nasal mucosa can dry out, leading to cracks and bleeding. This is often exacerbated by indoor heating systems that reduce humidity.
2. Nasal Trauma: Activities such as nose-picking, vigorous blowing of the nose, or even sneezing can cause small blood vessels in the nasal lining to rupture, resulting in blood-streaked mucus.
3. Infections: Viral infections, such as the common cold or sinusitis, can lead to inflammation of the nasal passages, which may also cause bleeding. The presence of infection can lead to increased nasal discharge that may be tinged with blood.
4. Allergic Rhinitis: Allergies can cause inflammation and irritation of the nasal passages, leading to increased mucus production and potential bleeding.
5. Structural Issues: Conditions such as a deviated septum or nasal polyps can contribute to chronic nasal bleeding. If you have a history of nasal surgery or structural abnormalities, these could be factors.
6. Underlying Health Conditions: In rare cases, more serious conditions such as bleeding disorders or tumors can cause recurrent nasal bleeding. However, these are less common and usually accompanied by other symptoms.
Given that you have experienced this issue previously and it resolved with treatment, it is likely that the current episode is related to one of the aforementioned causes. The fact that you have been unable to see a doctor due to the pandemic is understandable, but it is important to monitor your symptoms closely.
Here are some recommendations for managing your symptoms at home:
- Humidify Your Environment: Using a humidifier can help maintain moisture in the air, which may prevent your nasal passages from drying out.
- Saline Nasal Sprays: Over-the-counter saline sprays can help keep the nasal mucosa moist and may assist in healing any minor wounds.
- Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong odors, and allergens that could further irritate your nasal passages.
- Gentle Nose Blowing: When you need to blow your nose, do so gently to avoid causing further trauma to the nasal lining.
If your symptoms persist or worsen, or if you experience additional symptoms such as significant pain, swelling, or fever, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough examination, possibly including nasal endoscopy, to identify any underlying issues and provide appropriate treatment.
In conclusion, while blood-streaked nasal discharge can often be benign and self-limiting, it is essential to remain vigilant and seek medical advice if the problem continues or if you have any concerns about your health. Your well-being is important, and addressing these symptoms early can help prevent complications.
