Can women with uterine fibroids take chaste tree berry?

Hello Doctor: Due to my menstrual cycle being often irregular, I purchased a dietary supplement containing Vitex (Chaste Tree) to see if it can help improve my cycle issues.
I had a Pap smear at the clinic at the end of April and learned that I have a uterine fibroid (1.6 cm).
I do not experience pain during my menstrual period, but after researching recently, I found out that having uterine fibroids may not be suitable for taking Vitex?! (I have not given birth yet and have plans for pregnancy in the future.) I originally intended to confirm this and seek advice at the hospital, but due to the pandemic, I have postponed that.
I would like to ask the doctor: (1) Can I continue taking Vitex? (2) How often should I have follow-up examinations for the uterine fibroid? Thank you for taking the time to respond, I appreciate it.

Niming, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/06/17

1.
It is recommended to seek proper medical treatment for abnormal menstrual cycles.
Many dietary supplements on the market may have some hormonal effects, so it is advisable to consult your physician before taking them.
2.
Generally, if there are no symptoms, an ultrasound examination once every six months to a year is sufficient.
However, if symptoms are present, medical evaluation is necessary.

Vitex, also known as Chaste Tree or Vitex agnus-castus, is a herbal supplement that has been traditionally used to address various menstrual and hormonal issues in women. It is often recommended for conditions such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and irregular menstrual cycles. However, when it comes to uterine fibroids and their management, the situation becomes more nuanced.

1. Can Vitex Help with Uterine Fibroids?
While Vitex is known for its potential benefits in regulating menstrual cycles and alleviating symptoms associated with hormonal imbalances, its effects on uterine fibroids are not well-established. Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas, are benign tumors that develop in the uterus and can cause symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and pressure symptoms. The relationship between Vitex and fibroids is not straightforward; some anecdotal evidence suggests that Vitex may help balance hormones, which could theoretically influence fibroid growth. However, there is limited scientific research directly linking Vitex to the reduction or management of fibroids.

2. Should You Continue Taking Vitex?
Given your situation of having a 1.6 cm uterine fibroid and irregular menstrual cycles, it is essential to approach the use of Vitex with caution. While some women report improvements in their menstrual regularity and symptoms when taking Vitex, the presence of fibroids complicates this. There is a concern that Vitex may stimulate estrogen production, which could potentially exacerbate fibroid growth, as fibroids are often estrogen-sensitive. Therefore, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider, preferably a gynecologist, before continuing Vitex, especially considering your future pregnancy plans.

3. How Often Should You Monitor Uterine Fibroids?
The frequency of monitoring uterine fibroids can vary based on several factors, including the size of the fibroid, the symptoms you are experiencing, and your overall health. Generally, if a fibroid is small (like your 1.6 cm fibroid) and asymptomatic, it may be appropriate to have follow-up ultrasounds every 6 to 12 months to monitor for any changes in size or symptoms. If you start experiencing symptoms such as increased bleeding, pain, or pressure, more frequent monitoring may be warranted. Your healthcare provider can give you personalized recommendations based on your specific situation.

Conclusion
In summary, while Vitex may offer benefits for menstrual irregularities, its safety and efficacy in the context of uterine fibroids are not well-supported by clinical evidence. It is crucial to have an open discussion with your healthcare provider about your symptoms, the potential risks and benefits of continuing Vitex, and the appropriate monitoring schedule for your fibroids. This approach will help ensure that you make informed decisions regarding your reproductive health and future pregnancy plans. Always prioritize professional medical advice tailored to your individual health needs.
