Ear piercing
I am 19 years old, and I had my ears pierced when I was 15.
However, due to poor care, the piercings became infected, and I also experienced an allergic reaction to the metal in the earrings, so I removed them.
Now that my ear piercings have healed, I am considering getting them pierced again.
Is that okay? What precautions should I take when getting my ears pierced?

Dr. Jiang Zheen reply Dermatology
It is best to get your ears pierced by a physician, and choose earrings made of pure gold or pure silver.
Wishing you safety.

Re-piercing your ears after experiencing previous inflammation and allergies is certainly possible, but there are several important considerations to keep in mind to ensure a safe and successful experience.
First and foremost, it’s crucial to understand the reasons behind your previous issues. Inflammation and allergic reactions to metals, particularly nickel, are common problems associated with ear piercings. If you had a history of inflammation, it may have been due to improper aftercare or the use of low-quality jewelry that contained allergens. Before re-piercing, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional, preferably an allergist or a dermatologist, to evaluate your skin's sensitivity to metals. They may recommend allergy testing to identify specific allergens that could cause a reaction.
When you decide to re-pierce your ears, consider the following precautions:
1. Choose the Right Jewelry: Opt for hypoallergenic materials such as surgical stainless steel, titanium, or 14k gold. These materials are less likely to cause allergic reactions. Avoid jewelry that contains nickel, as this is a common allergen.
2. Select a Professional Piercer: Go to a reputable piercing studio with experienced professionals. They should follow strict hygiene protocols, use sterile equipment, and provide you with aftercare instructions.
3. Aftercare is Key: Proper aftercare is essential to prevent inflammation and infection. Clean the area around the piercing with a saline solution or an antiseptic recommended by your piercer. Avoid touching your ears with dirty hands and refrain from changing the jewelry until the piercing is fully healed.
4. Monitor for Signs of Infection: After re-piercing, keep an eye out for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge. If you notice any of these symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.
5. Be Mindful of Activities: Avoid swimming in pools or hot tubs during the healing process, as these can introduce bacteria to the piercing. Also, refrain from sleeping on the side of the new piercing until it has healed.
6. Patience with Healing: Healing times can vary, but ear lobe piercings typically take about 6 to 8 weeks to heal, while cartilage piercings may take longer. Be patient and allow your body to heal properly before changing jewelry or exposing the area to irritants.
7. Consider Your Allergies: If you have a known allergy to certain metals, it’s wise to carry an allergy card or inform your piercer about your sensitivities. This way, they can ensure that the jewelry used is safe for you.
In conclusion, re-piercing your ears is feasible, but it requires careful planning and consideration of your previous experiences with inflammation and allergies. By choosing the right materials, following proper aftercare, and being vigilant about any signs of complications, you can enjoy your new piercings without the issues you faced in the past. Always prioritize your health and safety, and don’t hesitate to seek professional advice if you have any concerns.
