Erectile dysfunction

Hello doctor, I am a recent graduate from junior high school, and I would like to ask you if erectile dysfunction can occur during puberty.
If so, what symptoms would be present? In the past, when I was in sixth grade, I used to masturbate every day, but since I had urethritis in junior high, I have done it less frequently because I was afraid of getting it again.
Then suddenly, I started experiencing erectile issues.
When I masturbate, at first, I can get a slight erection, but after about a minute, it becomes level.
Also, I have noticed that my morning erections are infrequent; sometimes they are firm, while other times they are just engorged.
I have been very anxious about this issue.
Later, I asked my dad to take me to see a doctor, and the doctor said that since I am still in puberty, it is impossible for me to have erectile dysfunction.
Even if I did, it would only be psychological, and no medication was prescribed.
I went home like that, and because of the upcoming exams, I paid less attention to this issue.
I felt like it gradually improved.
After the exams, due to the pandemic, I couldn't go out, and my masturbation became more regular.
Recently, I have started experiencing the same issues as before, where I can get a slight erection at first, but after 30 seconds to a minute, it becomes level again.
When I push down, it feels like there is a little resistance, but it bounces back when I release it.
Is this a physical issue or psychological? Why is this happening to me? Thank you, doctor, for reading this.

From your description, there doesn't seem to be any specific issues.
However, it seems like you are spending too much time on this matter.
You are still in your adolescence, and it's important to spend more time on physical activities; otherwise, the transition from adolescence to adulthood may not go well.
If both your physical and mental health are in good shape, your concerns will naturally improve.
Additionally, if you are engaging in DIY activities, doing it every other day is sufficient; don't treat it as a tool for seeking stimulation.

Erectile issues in adolescents, including concerns about erectile dysfunction (ED), can be a source of significant anxiety and confusion. It's important to understand that during puberty, many physiological and psychological changes occur, which can affect sexual function.
Firstly, it's essential to clarify that erectile dysfunction in adolescents is relatively uncommon and often linked to psychological factors rather than physical ones. In your case, you mentioned experiencing anxiety related to your sexual performance, particularly after having a urinary tract infection (UTI) and during a stressful period like preparing for exams. Stress, anxiety, and performance pressure can significantly impact sexual arousal and function.
The symptoms you described, such as difficulty maintaining an erection during masturbation, reduced frequency of morning erections, and fluctuations in the firmness of your erections, can be indicative of anxiety rather than a physical condition. It's not unusual for adolescents to experience variations in their sexual function, especially during times of stress or when they are preoccupied with other life events, such as exams or health concerns.
Your experience of initially being able to achieve an erection but then finding it difficult to maintain it could be related to performance anxiety. This is a common issue where the fear of not being able to perform can lead to a cycle of anxiety that further exacerbates the problem. The mind plays a crucial role in sexual arousal, and if you are worried about your ability to perform, it can lead to difficulties in achieving or maintaining an erection.

It's also worth noting that hormonal changes during puberty can lead to fluctuations in sexual desire and function. As your body continues to develop, these changes can stabilize, and you may find that your erectile function improves over time.
In terms of your concern about whether this is a physical or psychological issue, it seems more likely that it is psychological, especially given the context of your anxiety and stress. The fact that you noticed improvements when you were less focused on the issue (such as after your exams) supports this idea.
If you continue to experience these issues or if they cause you significant distress, it may be beneficial to speak with a healthcare professional who specializes in adolescent health or sexual health. They can provide a more thorough evaluation and help you address any underlying anxiety or stress that may be contributing to your erectile difficulties.
In the meantime, here are some strategies that may help:
1. Reduce Anxiety: Engage in relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to help manage anxiety levels.

2. Open Communication: If comfortable, discuss your concerns with a trusted adult or healthcare provider. Sometimes, just talking about your worries can alleviate some of the stress.

3. Focus on Overall Health: Maintain a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep. Physical health can significantly impact sexual health.

4. Limit Stimulation: If you find that certain activities or thoughts increase your anxiety about performance, consider taking a break from them until you feel more comfortable.

5. Educate Yourself: Understanding that fluctuations in sexual function are normal during adolescence can help reduce anxiety.
In conclusion, while erectile issues can be concerning, they are often temporary and linked to psychological factors, especially in adolescents. With time, support, and possibly professional guidance, many young individuals find that their sexual function normalizes as they navigate through the challenges of puberty and adolescence.
