There is a raised bump on the top of the head that feels hard and is not painful when pressed?
Hello, doctor.
About two years ago, I experienced dizziness upon waking up, accompanied by pain on the top of my head (I suspected it was due to hitting my head against the nightstand while sleeping).
At that time, I felt a bump on the right side of my head.
After a whole day, the dizziness and pain subsided, so I didn't pay much attention to it.
Recently, I noticed that the bump is still there.
Could this be a bone tumor? Should I see an orthopedic specialist for an examination? Thank you.

Dr. Chen Yongxue reply Orthopedics
Hello, primary bone tumors are rarely found on the top of the head, and 25 years old is not a common age for them.
Any protrusions on the top of the head may have naturally existed and often go unnoticed by most people, usually coming to attention only after an injury.
If you are concerned, you can visit an outpatient clinic for further examination.
Thank you.

More Info
When it comes to a hard bump on the head, particularly one that has been present for an extended period, it is understandable to have concerns about the possibility of a bone tumor. Based on the information you provided, it appears that you have been aware of this bump for about two years, and it was initially associated with a minor injury. The fact that it has persisted without significant changes or symptoms such as pain, dizziness, or neurological deficits is somewhat reassuring, but it does not completely rule out the need for further evaluation.
Bone tumors can be benign or malignant, and they can manifest as hard lumps on the skull. Common benign bone tumors include osteomas and osteochondromas, which are generally not harmful and may not require treatment unless they cause discomfort or cosmetic concerns. Malignant bone tumors, on the other hand, are less common and can be more serious, necessitating prompt medical attention.
Given that you have noticed the bump for an extended period and it has not caused any significant symptoms, it may not be an urgent situation. However, it is essential to have it evaluated by a medical professional to determine its nature. A visit to an orthopedic surgeon or a neurosurgeon would be appropriate, as they specialize in conditions related to bones and the nervous system, respectively. They can perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRIs to assess the bump's characteristics and rule out any serious conditions.
In addition to the physical examination and imaging, the doctor may consider factors such as the bump's size, shape, consistency, and any associated symptoms. If the bump is hard, immobile, and has not changed significantly over time, it is more likely to be a benign condition. However, if there are any changes in size, shape, or associated symptoms, further investigation would be warranted.
It is also worth noting that other conditions can cause similar symptoms, such as cysts, infections, or even inflammatory processes. Therefore, a thorough evaluation is crucial to arrive at an accurate diagnosis.
In summary, while the presence of a hard bump on the head can be concerning, the lack of significant symptoms over the past two years is a positive sign. However, it is still advisable to seek medical evaluation to ensure that it is not a bone tumor or another serious condition. Consulting with an orthopedic or neurosurgeon will provide you with the necessary guidance and peace of mind regarding your health. Remember, early detection and intervention are key in managing any potential health issues effectively.
