Swelling on the Glans: Possible Causes and Concerns - Urology

Glans issues

The glans penis on the left side of the urethra is slightly swollen.
When illuminated with a flashlight, there is a soft area that resembles a mosquito bite, with a slight protrusion in the center.
There are no red spots or redness, but it does cause some pain when touched or when it rubs against underwear (not very painful, similar to touching a pimple).
Can you help determine what might be the cause? Urination has been normal for the past two days.

More Info

Swelling on the glans, particularly when accompanied by a soft, raised area that resembles a mosquito bite, can be concerning for several reasons. While I cannot provide a definitive diagnosis without a physical examination, I can outline some possible causes and considerations based on the symptoms you've described.

Possible Causes of Swelling on the Glans
1. Allergic Reaction or Irritation: The swelling could be a result of an allergic reaction to soaps, detergents, or personal care products. Sometimes, friction from clothing can also cause irritation, leading to localized swelling.

2. Infection: Infections, such as balanitis (inflammation of the glans), can cause swelling. This condition may arise from poor hygiene, irritants, or infections like yeast or bacterial infections. If the swelling is due to an infection, it may eventually present with redness, discharge, or an unpleasant odor.

3. Pearly Penile Papules: These are small, harmless bumps that can appear on the glans or shaft of the penis. They are normal anatomical variations and do not require treatment.

4. Cysts or Folliculitis: A sebaceous cyst or folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles) could also present as a soft, raised area. These conditions are generally benign but can sometimes become infected.

5. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Certain STIs can cause localized swelling and discomfort. If there is any chance of exposure to STIs, it is important to seek medical evaluation.

6. Trauma or Injury: If there has been any recent trauma to the area, even minor, it could lead to localized swelling.

When to Seek Medical Attention
Given that the swelling is causing some discomfort, albeit mild, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. Key indicators for seeking medical attention include:
- Persistent swelling that does not improve.

- Development of additional symptoms such as redness, warmth, discharge, or fever.

- Any changes in urination, such as pain or difficulty.

- If you have had unprotected sexual contact, it is essential to get tested for STIs.

Diagnosis and Treatment
A healthcare provider will likely conduct a physical examination and may ask about your medical history, recent activities, and any other symptoms. Depending on the findings, they may recommend:
- Topical Treatments: If an allergic reaction or irritation is suspected, topical corticosteroids or antihistamines may be prescribed.

- Antibiotics: If an infection is diagnosed, appropriate antibiotics or antifungal medications may be necessary.

- Observation: In cases like pearly penile papules or minor irritations, reassurance and observation may be all that is needed.

Conclusion
While the swelling on the glans could be due to a variety of benign causes, it is essential to approach this symptom with caution. Monitoring the situation and seeking medical advice will help ensure that any underlying issues are addressed promptly. Remember, maintaining good hygiene and being aware of any changes in your body are crucial for overall health. If you have any concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for personalized advice and treatment options.
