Can I Take Anxiety or Heart Medications Before Moderna Vaccine? - Psychiatry

Is it safe for individuals with autonomic nervous system disorders to take medications such as Jing An Ning or Xin Lv Ding when receiving vaccinations?

Dear Dr.
Lin,
I recently received a notification to receive the Moderna vaccine.
I have autonomic nervous system dysregulation, and my resting heart rate is around 90 bpm.
When sitting or walking, it can rise to 100-120 bpm, and I need to lie down to bring it down to about 84 bpm.
I am concerned that receiving the vaccine may trigger a panic attack, leading to an elevated heart rate.
If I receive the Moderna vaccine, can I still take antiarrhythmic medication to lower my heart rate, or use a sleep aid like Jing An Ning? Additionally, I have undergone an electrocardiogram with a cardiologist, who determined that I do not have any heart-related conditions.

Thank you, Dr.
Lin.
Wishing you good health and all the best.

Xiao Lin, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/07/01

Dr. Lin Mianzhang reply Psychiatry

Hello Xiaolin: You can continue taking your heart rhythm medication and Jing'an Ning, as they will not interact with the vaccine.
Please rest assured.
Wishing you peace and health!

When considering vaccination, particularly with the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, it is essential to address any underlying health conditions, especially those related to heart rhythm and anxiety. Your concerns about experiencing heightened heart rates and anxiety during or after the vaccination are valid, especially given your history of autonomic nervous system dysregulation.

First and foremost, it is generally acceptable to take medications for anxiety or heart rhythm issues before receiving the vaccine, provided that these medications have been prescribed by your healthcare provider and you have no contraindications to their use. Medications such as beta-blockers or anxiolytics can help manage your heart rate and anxiety symptoms, potentially making the vaccination experience more comfortable for you.

Heart Medications:
If you are prescribed heart medications, such as those to manage your heart rate, it is crucial to continue taking them as directed. These medications can help stabilize your heart rate, which may be beneficial before and after receiving the vaccine. However, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider about the timing of your medication relative to the vaccination. They may recommend taking your heart medication shortly before your appointment to ensure optimal heart rate control during the vaccination process.

Anxiety Medications:
Regarding anxiety medications, such as the one you mentioned (景安寧), it is also generally safe to take these before your vaccination. These medications can help alleviate anxiety and may prevent panic attacks or excessive worry about the vaccination process. Again, discussing this with your healthcare provider is essential, as they can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current health status.

Monitoring Your Response:
After receiving the vaccine, it is important to monitor your body's response. Common side effects of the Moderna vaccine include pain at the injection site, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, chills, fever, and nausea. While these side effects are typically mild to moderate, they can sometimes exacerbate feelings of anxiety. If you experience significant anxiety or heart palpitations after vaccination, it is crucial to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance.

Consultation with Your Doctor:
Given your specific concerns about heart rate and anxiety, it would be prudent to have a thorough discussion with your healthcare provider before the vaccination. They can assess your current health status, review your medications, and provide tailored recommendations. If necessary, they may suggest alternative strategies for managing anxiety or heart rate during the vaccination process.

Conclusion:
In summary, it is generally safe to take your prescribed heart and anxiety medications before receiving the Moderna vaccine. However, it is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider to ensure that this approach is appropriate for your specific situation. They can help you develop a plan to manage your anxiety and heart rate effectively, allowing you to proceed with vaccination with greater confidence and comfort. Remember, vaccination is a vital step in protecting yourself against COVID-19, and addressing your concerns with a healthcare professional can help alleviate anxiety surrounding the process.
