Ankle bone spur surgery?

I have bone spurs on both of my ankles.
After the bone spur on my left foot fractured, it became a loose bone spur.
My last diagnosis was a year ago, and it is now affecting my normal activities.
I am considering surgery and would like to know how long the recovery time typically is after the procedure.
Is it possible to have one ankle operated on, recover, and then have the other ankle operated on afterward in order to maintain some level of self-care? Thank you!

Mr. Hsu, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/07/06

Dr. Wang Shouji reply Orthopedics

Hello, the recovery time after surgery depends on the type of procedure performed.
Generally, it takes at least two to three months for recovery.
It is important to begin range of motion exercises as soon as possible after surgery to prevent stiffness, and you can do this one leg at a time.
Changhua Hospital cares about your health.

Ankle bone spurs, also known as osteophytes, can develop due to various factors, including repetitive stress, arthritis, or injury. When these spurs become symptomatic, as in your case, they can significantly impact mobility and quality of life. Surgical intervention is often considered when conservative treatments, such as physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, or corticosteroid injections, fail to provide relief.

Recovery Time After Ankle Bone Spur Surgery
The recovery time after ankle bone spur surgery can vary based on several factors, including the extent of the surgery, your overall health, and adherence to post-operative rehabilitation protocols. Generally, patients can expect the following timeline:
1. Initial Recovery (1-2 weeks): After surgery, you will likely be in a splint or cast to immobilize the ankle. During this period, rest is crucial, and you may be advised to keep weight off the affected foot. Pain and swelling are common, and your doctor may prescribe pain management strategies.

2. Follow-Up Appointment (2-4 weeks): A follow-up appointment will typically occur within two weeks post-surgery to assess healing. Stitches may be removed, and you may be transitioned to a walking boot. At this stage, physical therapy may begin, focusing on gentle range-of-motion exercises.

3. Physical Therapy (4-8 weeks): Rehabilitation is essential for restoring strength and mobility. Physical therapy usually starts with passive movements and progresses to active exercises as tolerated. Most patients can expect to regain significant function within 4 to 8 weeks, but full recovery may take longer.

4. Full Recovery (3-6 months): Complete healing of the bone and soft tissues can take several months. While many patients return to normal activities within 6 to 12 weeks, full recovery, including the return to high-impact activities, may take up to six months or longer.

Staged Procedures for Bilateral Ankle Surgery
Regarding your question about performing surgery on one ankle at a time, this is a common approach, especially if both ankles are affected. Here are some considerations:
- Sequential Surgery: Many surgeons recommend addressing one ankle first to allow for a more focused recovery. This approach can help you maintain some level of mobility and independence while the first ankle heals. Once you have regained sufficient strength and function in the first ankle, the second surgery can be scheduled.

- Rehabilitation: After the first surgery, you will undergo rehabilitation, which is crucial for recovery. Once you are able to walk and perform daily activities comfortably with the first ankle, you can discuss the timing for the second surgery with your orthopedic surgeon.

- Risks and Benefits: Staging the surgeries can reduce the overall impact on your mobility during recovery. However, it is essential to weigh the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider, as individual circumstances can vary widely.

Conclusion
In summary, ankle bone spur surgery can provide significant relief from pain and improve mobility, but recovery requires time and commitment to rehabilitation. Performing the surgeries in stages can be beneficial, allowing you to maintain some level of independence while healing. Always consult with your orthopedic surgeon to develop a personalized plan that considers your specific situation, overall health, and lifestyle needs. They will provide guidance on the best approach for your recovery and help you set realistic expectations for your rehabilitation journey.
