Testicular issues?
Hello, I would like to ask the doctor about something.
Recently, I underwent surgery for left-sided varicocele.
After the surgery, the doctor mentioned that my left testicle had slightly shrunk.
Today, I noticed that my left testicle is noticeably smaller than the right one.
I am already 20 years old, so I would like to know if there is still a chance for my testicles to return to normal size.
If not, will this affect my future fertility and development? I am concerned because I am going through puberty, and I believe the development of my testicles is nearing completion.
Thank you for your assistance, doctor.

Hello: My left testicle is noticeably smaller than my right one.
I would like to ask the doctor if, at the age of 20, my testicles still have a chance to return to normal size? --> The chances are slim.
If they don't, will it affect my future fertility and development? --> That would require testing.
Generally, it should not have a significant impact.
Wishing you good health.

After undergoing varicocele surgery, it is common for patients to have concerns about testicular size and whether it can return to normal. The relationship between varicocele, testicular size, and fertility is complex and can vary from person to person.
Firstly, it is important to understand that varicocele is a condition characterized by enlarged veins within the scrotum, which can lead to increased temperature and impaired blood flow to the testicles. This can potentially affect testicular function and size. In many cases, men with varicoceles may experience a reduction in testicular size, particularly on the affected side.
After surgery, some patients report a change in testicular size. It is not uncommon for the testicle to appear smaller initially due to swelling or changes in blood flow. Over time, many patients may notice an improvement in size and function as the blood flow normalizes and the testicle receives adequate oxygen and nutrients. However, the extent of recovery can vary based on several factors, including the severity of the varicocele prior to surgery, the age of the patient, and individual healing responses.
At 20 years old, you are still within a period where testicular growth can occur, although most of the growth typically happens during puberty. If the testicle has shrunk due to the varicocele, there is a possibility that it may regain some size after surgery, especially if the surgery was successful in restoring normal blood flow. However, it is essential to have realistic expectations, as not all patients will see a complete return to pre-surgery size.
Regarding fertility, varicocele has been associated with decreased sperm production and quality. If the surgery is successful, many men experience improvements in sperm parameters, which can enhance fertility potential. However, if the testicle remains smaller than normal, it could potentially impact sperm production. It is advisable to discuss these concerns with your healthcare provider, who may recommend a semen analysis to assess sperm health post-surgery.
In summary, while there is a chance that testicular size may improve after varicocele surgery, it is not guaranteed. The potential impact on fertility will depend on various factors, including the overall health of the testicle and the success of the surgery. It is crucial to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider, who can offer personalized advice and monitor your recovery. If you have ongoing concerns about testicular size or fertility, consider scheduling a follow-up appointment for further evaluation and guidance.
