Post-operative issues after wisdom tooth extraction?
I had my upper and lower left wisdom teeth, both impacted, extracted on July 6th.
Today is the fifth day, and starting yesterday, I was able to talk and eat without pain.
However, this morning, I started having difficulty speaking and eating again, and the extraction site began to hurt.
The adjacent teeth are also starting to ache.
Is this normal?

If you experience pain at the extraction site after having your wisdom teeth removed, it may indicate inflammation or infection at the site.
It is recommended to maintain good oral hygiene, and if the pain persists, it is advisable to return for a follow-up examination of the wound.

After wisdom tooth extraction, especially for impacted teeth, it is common to experience a range of symptoms during the recovery process. The timeline for healing can vary significantly from person to person, and several factors can influence your recovery, including the complexity of the extraction, your overall health, and how well you follow post-operative care instructions.
In your case, it sounds like you initially experienced a positive recovery, being able to speak and eat without pain by the fifth day post-surgery. However, the resurgence of pain and difficulty speaking and eating on the sixth day is concerning and could indicate a few potential issues.
1. Normal Healing Process: After wisdom tooth extraction, it is typical for patients to experience fluctuations in pain levels. The initial healing phase may seem to progress well, but as the body continues to heal, inflammation can increase, leading to discomfort. This is especially true if you have been using your mouth more than usual, which can irritate the surgical site.
2. Dry Socket: One of the most common complications following tooth extraction is a condition known as dry socket (alveolar osteitis). This occurs when the blood clot that forms in the socket becomes dislodged or dissolves before the wound has fully healed, exposing the underlying bone and nerves. Symptoms of dry socket include severe pain that can radiate to the ear or jaw, bad breath, and an unpleasant taste in the mouth. If you suspect this might be the case, it is crucial to contact your dentist or oral surgeon for evaluation and treatment.
3. Infection: Another possibility is that an infection has developed at the extraction site. Signs of infection can include increased pain, swelling, redness, fever, and pus discharge. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly, as infections can lead to more severe complications if left untreated.
4. Adjacent Teeth Sensitivity: The extraction of wisdom teeth can sometimes cause temporary sensitivity or discomfort in adjacent teeth. This can happen due to the trauma of the extraction process or changes in the alignment of your bite. If the pain persists or worsens, it may be worth discussing with your dentist.
5. Post-operative Care: Ensuring you follow post-operative care instructions is vital for a smooth recovery. This includes avoiding hard or crunchy foods, not using straws, and maintaining good oral hygiene without disturbing the extraction site. If you have not been following these guidelines, it could contribute to your current symptoms.
In conclusion, while some discomfort can be expected during the recovery process, a sudden increase in pain or difficulty with speaking and eating after a period of improvement should not be ignored. It is advisable to contact your oral surgeon or dentist to discuss your symptoms and determine the best course of action. They may recommend an examination, imaging, or treatment options such as pain management or antibiotics if an infection is suspected. Remember, timely intervention can prevent complications and promote a smoother recovery.
