The belly button often has an unpleasant odor?

Hello Doctor, my BMI is normal, I have no history of diabetes or any other chronic diseases.
My navel is usually quite clean (not excessively cleaned) and I maintain a normal diet with a regular exercise routine.
However, for the past month, I have been experiencing a severe odor coming from my navel.
I have noticed that sometimes there is a discharge of a foul-smelling liquid, which crystallizes into a yellow substance.
Could this be an indication of navel inflammation? Should I seek medical attention immediately? Due to the pandemic, I would prefer to consult online first.
If you also believe the situation is serious, I will seek in-person medical care.
Thank you!

Foul odor emanating from the belly button, especially when accompanied by unusual discharge, can be concerning and may indicate an underlying issue that requires attention. Given your description of a normal BMI, no history of diabetes or chronic diseases, and a generally clean belly button, it is important to consider several potential causes for the odor and discharge you are experiencing.

One common cause of foul odor from the belly button is an infection. The belly button, or navel, can sometimes trap moisture, debris, and bacteria, leading to an infection known as umbilical infection or omphalitis. This is more common in individuals with certain risk factors, such as obesity, diabetes, or poor hygiene, but can occur in otherwise healthy individuals as well. Symptoms of an infection may include redness, swelling, pain, and discharge that may be yellow or greenish in color, often accompanied by a foul smell.

Another possibility is that the odor and discharge could be due to a condition called an umbilical granuloma. This is a benign growth of tissue that can occur at the site of the belly button and may produce a discharge that can be foul-smelling. Granulomas can develop after the umbilical cord falls off in infants, but they can also occur in adults, especially if there is irritation or inflammation.

In some cases, the odor may be related to skin conditions such as eczema or dermatitis, which can cause irritation and lead to secondary infections. Additionally, if you have recently changed your diet or introduced new foods, this could potentially affect body odor, although it is less likely to cause localized symptoms like those you describe.

Given that you have noticed a significant change in the odor and the presence of a yellowish discharge, it is advisable to seek medical attention. While it may not be an emergency, consulting with a healthcare provider is important to rule out any infections or other underlying conditions. They may perform a physical examination and, if necessary, take a sample of the discharge for laboratory analysis to determine the cause.

In the meantime, you can take some steps to care for the area. Gently clean the belly button with mild soap and water, and ensure it is thoroughly dried afterward. Avoid using harsh soaps or excessive scrubbing, as this can irritate the skin further. If you notice any signs of increased redness, swelling, or pain, or if the discharge worsens, it is important to seek medical care promptly.

In summary, while foul odor and discharge from the belly button can be caused by various factors, including infections and skin conditions, it is crucial to have a healthcare professional evaluate your symptoms to determine the appropriate course of action. Given the current pandemic situation, many healthcare providers offer telehealth services, allowing you to discuss your symptoms and concerns without needing to visit a clinic in person. If your symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to seek medical advice.
