Hard lump below the nipple?
Hello, doctor.
I am a 15-year-old male with normal height and weight.
I would like to ask about a cyst I discovered under my right nipple about a month ago.
Initially, it was not very large, but it seems to have increased in size, although not significantly and it does not extend beyond the areola.
It does not hurt unless I press on it, and I can clearly feel a lump.
There is no discharge or any visible issues on the surface.
The cyst has noticeable contours when palpated.
I tend to stay up late but have been able to catch up on sleep afterward.
Could you please advise me on what this issue might be? Thank you.
Xiao Di, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/07/12
Dr. Yuan Tianmin reply Breast and Thyroid
In general, our experience suggests that this is related to development; it is simply that the tissue beneath the nipple is thicker, which gives the sensation of having a lump when touched.

Understanding breast lumps in teenage boys is an important topic that often raises concerns among adolescents and their parents. As a 15-year-old male, it's not uncommon to experience changes in your body, especially during puberty, which can lead to various physical developments, including breast tissue changes.
Firstly, it's essential to understand that during puberty, boys can experience a condition known as gynecomastia, which is characterized by the enlargement of breast tissue. This condition is primarily due to hormonal changes in the body, particularly the balance between testosterone and estrogen. In many cases, gynecomastia is temporary and resolves on its own as hormone levels stabilize.
In your case, you mentioned discovering a lump under your right nipple about a month ago, which has slightly increased in size but remains within the confines of the areola and is painful only upon pressure. The fact that it does not cause pain when not pressed and lacks any discharge is a positive sign. The lump you are feeling could be a benign condition related to the normal development of breast tissue during puberty.
However, it is crucial to monitor the lump for any changes. If the lump continues to grow, becomes increasingly painful, or if you notice any other unusual symptoms, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional, preferably a pediatric endocrinologist or a healthcare provider specializing in adolescent medicine. They can perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to assess the lump further.
Regarding your lifestyle, you mentioned having irregular sleep patterns. While sleep can affect overall health, including hormonal balance, it is unlikely to be the sole cause of the breast lump. However, maintaining a healthy lifestyle with adequate sleep, a balanced diet, and regular exercise can positively influence your overall well-being and hormonal health.
In summary, while the lump you are experiencing could be a normal part of puberty, it is essential to keep an eye on it and seek medical advice if you have any concerns. Remember, many boys go through similar experiences during their teenage years, and it is a natural part of growing up. Open communication with a trusted adult or healthcare provider can help alleviate any worries you may have and ensure you receive the appropriate care and guidance.
