Probability of Pregnancy
Hello, doctor.
I have done some research but still want to ask for your opinion.
My girlfriend's last menstrual period started on June 7, with a cycle of about 27-30 days.
The last sexual intercourse was on June 26, during which we used a condom and there was no breakage confirmed by water testing afterward.
Her period was expected on July 7, but it has been delayed until today (July 12), and the color is lighter than usual, appearing pink, with a reduced flow.
She is currently experiencing abdominal pain, and on July 10, a pregnancy test showed one line.
During these five days of delay, she has not experienced breast tenderness or any significant changes in other parts of her body, but she has felt nauseous after eating squid and fish roe.
My girlfriend has recently changed her environment to prepare for exams.
I would like to ask if this situation could be caused by stress.
Thank you, doctor! Wishing you good health.

If a urine test shows no pregnancy, it is likely that there is no pregnancy.
Stress or changes in routine can indeed affect hormone levels, which may lead to various physiological responses.
If there are any discomforts, it is advisable to consult a physician for evaluation.

When considering the situation you've described regarding your girlfriend's delayed period and the potential impact of stress, it's essential to understand the various factors that can influence menstrual cycles and pregnancy chances.
Firstly, the menstrual cycle can be affected by numerous factors, including stress, lifestyle changes, and hormonal fluctuations. In your girlfriend's case, she has recently changed her environment and is preparing for an exam, which can undoubtedly introduce significant stress. Stress is known to affect the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that regulates the menstrual cycle. When the body is under stress, it can lead to hormonal imbalances that may cause a delay in menstruation or changes in menstrual flow.
Given that your girlfriend's last menstrual period was on June 7, and she had sexual intercourse on June 26 with protection, the likelihood of pregnancy is relatively low, especially since you confirmed that the condom did not break. The fact that she tested negative for pregnancy on July 10 further supports this. However, it's important to note that pregnancy tests are most reliable when taken after a missed period, so if her period continues to be delayed, it may be worth retesting a few days later.
The symptoms she is experiencing, such as abdominal pain and a lighter, pinkish discharge, could be attributed to several factors. A lighter period can sometimes occur due to stress, hormonal changes, or even the onset of anovulatory cycles, where ovulation does not occur. The abdominal pain could also be related to stress or other benign causes, such as gastrointestinal discomfort, especially if she has been experiencing nausea after eating certain foods.
In summary, while the chances of pregnancy seem low given the circumstances, the delay in her period and the changes in her menstrual flow could very well be linked to the stress of her new environment and exam preparation. It is advisable for her to monitor her symptoms closely. If her period does not resume in the next week or if she continues to experience discomfort, it would be prudent for her to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation. They may recommend additional tests or assessments to rule out any underlying issues.
In the meantime, encouraging her to manage stress through relaxation techniques, regular exercise, and a balanced diet can be beneficial. Stress management is crucial not only for menstrual health but also for overall well-being. If she finds that her symptoms persist or worsen, seeking medical advice is always the best course of action.
