Unexplained red spots on the knee?
I noticed some unexplained red spots on my knees over the past couple of days.
Both legs have them, and they are neither painful nor itchy, and there are no raised areas, but they seem to be more noticeable than the day before.
A few days ago, I was in an area with grass.
Could this be caused by wild grass? (However, there are none on my calves.) Thank you, doctor.

No lesions were observed, making it difficult to determine the issue.
If it is causing significant distress, please seek medical attention promptly.

More Info
Unexplained red spots on the knees can be concerning, especially when they appear suddenly and without accompanying symptoms like pain or itching. Based on your description, there are several potential causes for these red spots, and I will outline them along with possible solutions.
Possible Causes
1. Allergic Reaction: Given that you mentioned being in a grassy area, it’s possible that you may have come into contact with an allergen, such as pollen or certain plants. Allergic reactions can manifest as red spots or rashes on the skin, even if they do not itch or hurt.
2. Insect Bites: Another possibility is insect bites. Some insects, like mosquitoes or fleas, can leave small red spots that may not be painful or itchy initially. If you were in an area where insects are prevalent, this could be a likely cause.
3. Petechiae: These are small red or purple spots that can appear on the skin due to bleeding under the skin. They are often harmless but can sometimes indicate a more serious condition, especially if they appear suddenly and in large numbers.
4. Dermatitis: Contact dermatitis can occur when the skin reacts to something it has come into contact with, such as a plant, chemical, or even certain fabrics. This can lead to red spots or patches on the skin.
5. Vascular Issues: Conditions affecting blood vessels, such as vasculitis, can also lead to red spots on the skin. This is less common but should be considered if the spots persist or if you develop other symptoms.
Recommended Solutions
1. Observation: Since the spots are not painful or itchy, it may be best to monitor them for a few days. If they begin to change in appearance, increase in number, or if you develop additional symptoms (such as fever or swelling), it would be wise to seek medical attention.
2. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect an allergic reaction or contact dermatitis, try to avoid any known irritants. This includes staying away from the grassy area where you may have been exposed.
3. Topical Treatments: If the spots become bothersome or if you notice any itching, over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream may help reduce inflammation and irritation. However, since you mentioned that the spots are not itchy, this may not be necessary.
4. Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress to the affected area can help soothe the skin and reduce any potential inflammation.
5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the red spots do not resolve within a week, or if you have any concerns about their appearance or if they start to spread, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination and may recommend tests to determine the underlying cause.
Conclusion
In summary, while the appearance of unexplained red spots on your knees can be alarming, there are several benign explanations, especially considering your recent exposure to grass. Monitoring the spots and avoiding potential irritants is a reasonable first step. However, if you notice any changes or if the spots persist, seeking medical advice is the best course of action to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. Always prioritize your health and well-being by consulting a professional when in doubt.
