Confused About Which Specialist to See After Pregnancy Issues? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Which department should I consult?

I am a married woman with a small baby.
After giving birth, I developed many small growths on my body, and my menstrual cycle has been delayed by about ten days each month (before pregnancy, my cycle was normal and lasted only five days).
I have also gained a lot of weight and cannot seem to lose it, which is very distressing for me.
I am unsure what the problem might be and which specialist I should see.
Can anyone help me?

Xiao Mi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2003/04/22

Ms.
Xiaomi, it is noted that you are experiencing postpartum weight gain and menstrual irregularities due to abnormal uterine bleeding.
Generally, there are two causes for this: the first is called dysfunctional uterine bleeding, which is caused by hormonal imbalances postpartum leading to ovulatory dysfunction; the second is referred to as organic uterine bleeding, which is due to lesions or tumors in the uterus or ovaries.
Please visit the obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinic for necessary examinations and treatment.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

It sounds like you are experiencing several concerning symptoms following your pregnancy, including the appearance of small growths (possibly skin tags or other types of lesions), prolonged menstrual cycles, and weight gain. These issues can be quite distressing, and it's understandable that you feel confused about which specialist to consult.

First and foremost, it’s important to recognize that many women experience various physical changes after childbirth due to hormonal fluctuations, lifestyle changes, and the physical demands of caring for a newborn. However, persistent or troubling symptoms warrant a thorough evaluation.

1. Skin Changes: The small growths you mentioned could be related to hormonal changes that occur during and after pregnancy. Conditions such as skin tags, which are benign growths that can appear on the skin, are common during this time. However, if these growths are new, changing, or causing discomfort, it would be wise to consult a dermatologist. They can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend treatment options if necessary.

2. Menstrual Irregularities: A significant change in your menstrual cycle, such as an extended period, can be caused by various factors, including hormonal imbalances, stress, or underlying medical conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It is advisable to see a gynecologist for a comprehensive evaluation. They may perform tests, such as blood work to check hormone levels, and possibly an ultrasound to assess your reproductive organs.

3. Weight Gain: Postpartum weight gain can be influenced by several factors, including hormonal changes, lifestyle adjustments, and the physical demands of motherhood. If you find it challenging to lose weight despite efforts, a consultation with a healthcare provider is recommended. A gynecologist can help assess whether there are any underlying hormonal issues contributing to weight gain. Additionally, a registered dietitian or nutritionist can provide guidance on healthy eating and exercise tailored to your postpartum needs.

4. Mental Health Considerations: It’s also essential to consider your mental health during this period. The postpartum period can be emotionally taxing, and symptoms of anxiety or depression can manifest physically. If you feel overwhelmed, it may be beneficial to speak with a mental health professional who specializes in postpartum issues.

In summary, based on your symptoms, I recommend starting with a visit to a gynecologist, who can address your menstrual irregularities and overall reproductive health. They can also refer you to a dermatologist for your skin concerns and a nutritionist if weight management is a priority. If you are experiencing emotional distress, do not hesitate to seek support from a mental health professional.

Remember, you are not alone in this journey, and many women face similar challenges after childbirth. Seeking help is a positive step towards understanding and managing your health concerns effectively.
