There is yellow dry discharge in the center of the nipple?

Hello, doctor.
I would like to inquire about a sudden discovery today of yellow, dry discharge in the middle of my left nipple.
I'm not sure how long it has been there, and it feels somewhat difficult to remove.
It's not a lot, just about three or four small, lump-like pieces.
I would like to ask the doctor what diseases or causes this might indicate.
Thank you!

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/07/13

This doesn't seem to be a disease, but it might still be a good idea to have a dermatologist clean the area around your nipples.

Yellow dry discharge from the nipple can be concerning, and it's important to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical attention. There are several factors that could contribute to this symptom, and while some may be benign, others could indicate an underlying condition that requires further evaluation.

One common cause of nipple discharge, including yellow discharge, is a condition known as galactorrhea. This condition can occur in both men and women and is characterized by the spontaneous flow of milk or milk-like fluid from the breast. Galactorrhea can be caused by hormonal imbalances, particularly elevated levels of prolactin, which can be due to various factors such as stress, certain medications, or underlying health issues like pituitary tumors.

Another possible cause of yellow discharge could be related to infections or inflammation of the breast tissue, such as mastitis or a breast abscess. Mastitis is more common in breastfeeding women but can occur in others as well. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, warmth, and tenderness in the affected area, along with possible fever. If the discharge is accompanied by these symptoms, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly.

Duct ectasia is another condition that can lead to discharge from the nipple. This occurs when a milk duct beneath the nipple dilates, fills with fluid, and thickens, which can lead to blockage and discharge. This condition is more common in women who are nearing menopause and can sometimes be associated with pain or tenderness in the breast.

In some cases, yellow discharge may also be a sign of a benign breast condition, such as a papilloma, which is a small, wart-like growth in the ducts of the breast. While these growths are typically non-cancerous, they can cause discharge and may require monitoring or treatment.

It's important to note that while many causes of nipple discharge are benign, any new or unusual discharge should be evaluated by a healthcare professional, especially if it is persistent, accompanied by other symptoms (such as pain, swelling, or changes in the breast), or if there is a history of breast cancer in your family.

When you consult with a healthcare provider, they may perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as a mammogram or ultrasound, to assess the breast tissue further. In some cases, a ductogram or biopsy may be necessary to determine the exact cause of the discharge.

In summary, yellow dry discharge from the nipple can arise from various causes, including hormonal imbalances, infections, duct ectasia, or benign growths. It is crucial to monitor the situation and seek medical advice if the discharge persists or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms. Early evaluation and diagnosis can help address any underlying issues and provide peace of mind.
