Temperature and Techniques for Urological Hygiene - Urology

Cleaning Concerns

I used to have issues with cleaning, but now that I've resolved them, I still have some questions lingering in my mind.
I would like to ask the doctor about the appropriate temperature range for warm water washing.
Is it between 20 to 40 degrees Celsius? Since I usually soak in the water to wash, is it sufficient if it feels comfortable? I have been thorough with scrubbing and drying, and on nice days, I wash with just cold water without turning on the heater, which I find works well.
In the past, I often had buildup, and when I heated the water a bit, I noticed a lot of debris coming off when I scrubbed, leading me to think that heating the water might be more effective.
However, if the water is too hot, it can be uncomfortable.
During winter, when I wash with cold water, I notice less buildup, but scrubbing feels less effective, which makes me curious if temperature affects the cleaning process.
I also wonder if my scrubbing technique was not thorough enough back then, or if smegma needs to soak longer in water.
I usually just soak and start scrubbing right away.
Thank you, doctor, for taking the time to clarify my doubts.

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology

Hello: There is no specific temperature, but personally, I do not recommend using water that is too hot.
Additionally, there is no need to scrub too hard while cleaning; if there is some redness after washing, it is not advisable.
Make sure to dry thoroughly.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to urological hygiene, particularly regarding the cleaning of the genital area, there are several important factors to consider, including water temperature, cleaning techniques, and the overall approach to hygiene.

Water Temperature for Cleaning
The ideal water temperature for washing the genital area typically falls within a range of 20 to 40 degrees Celsius (68 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit). This range is generally comfortable for most individuals and is effective for cleaning without causing irritation to the sensitive skin in that area.
- Comfort is Key: If you find that a certain temperature feels comfortable and does not cause any discomfort or irritation, it is likely suitable for your cleaning routine. The goal is to ensure that the water is warm enough to help dissolve any buildup or debris without being so hot that it causes burns or irritation.

- Effectiveness of Warm Water: Warm water can indeed help in loosening and removing smegma (the buildup of dead skin cells, oils, and other substances) more effectively than cold water. However, it is essential to ensure that the water is not excessively hot, as this can lead to skin damage.

Cleaning Techniques
1. Soaking: If you are soaking in warm water, it can help soften any buildup, making it easier to clean. However, it is important to ensure that you do not soak for too long, as prolonged exposure to water can lead to skin maceration.

2. Gentle Scrubbing: When you begin to scrub, use a gentle motion. Rubbing too hard can irritate the skin and may lead to inflammation or discomfort. It is advisable to use your fingers or a soft cloth to clean the area thoroughly.

3. Thorough Drying: After washing, make sure to dry the area completely. Moist environments can promote the growth of bacteria and fungi, leading to infections. Pat the area dry with a clean towel rather than rubbing it.

4. Regular Cleaning: Establish a routine for cleaning the genital area. Regular cleaning helps prevent the buildup of smegma and reduces the risk of infections.

Addressing Buildup
If you previously experienced issues with buildup, it may have been due to insufficient cleaning techniques or infrequent cleaning. Here are some tips to ensure effective hygiene:
- Frequency: Clean the area regularly, ideally daily, to prevent buildup. If you are uncircumcised, it is especially important to clean under the foreskin to remove smegma.

- Use of Soap: While warm water is effective, you may also consider using a mild, unscented soap. Avoid harsh soaps or those with strong fragrances, as they can irritate the sensitive skin.

- Hydration: Ensure that you are well-hydrated, as this can help maintain healthy skin and may reduce the likelihood of buildup.

Conclusion
In summary, maintaining proper urological hygiene is crucial for overall health. Using warm water within a comfortable range, employing gentle cleaning techniques, and ensuring thorough drying can significantly improve hygiene practices. If you continue to experience issues with buildup or discomfort, it may be beneficial to consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice and recommendations. Regular hygiene practices, combined with awareness of your body’s responses, will help you maintain a healthy and comfortable state.
