Brown discharge on the first day of menstruation?

Hello, doctor.
Yesterday was the first day of my menstrual period, and when I went to the bathroom, I noticed a little bit of pink when I wiped, so I used a sanitary pad.
However, when I got home, I found that there was brown discharge, and this morning, there was also a little brown discharge on the pad.
But when I wiped in the morning, there was some red blood (the amount has slightly increased).
Should I be concerned about irregular menstruation or early pregnancy? Do I need to buy a pregnancy test?

Qi, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/07/20

1.
For pregnancy concerns, please perform a home pregnancy test or visit a gynecologist for examination and evaluation four weeks after your most recent sexual intercourse.

2.
There are many causes of "abnormal vaginal bleeding," including lifestyle habits, stress, age, vaginal infections, benign gynecological conditions, and malignant tumors, among others.
Therefore, it is recommended that you consult a specialized gynecologist for examination and evaluation.

Understanding brown discharge, especially on the first day of your period, can be a source of confusion for many individuals. It’s important to differentiate between normal menstrual flow, potential signs of pregnancy, and other underlying conditions that may cause unusual discharge.

Firstly, brown discharge is often just old blood that has taken longer to exit the uterus. This can happen at the beginning or end of a menstrual period. When menstrual blood takes longer to leave the uterus, it can oxidize, turning brown. This is typically not a cause for concern and is considered a normal variation of menstrual flow.

In your case, you mentioned experiencing a bit of pink discharge initially, followed by brown discharge, and then some red blood. This pattern can indicate the start of your menstrual cycle. The pink color often signifies that the blood is fresh but may be mixed with cervical mucus, while the brown discharge suggests older blood. It’s common for menstrual flow to start off light and gradually increase in volume and brightness as the period progresses.

Regarding the possibility of pregnancy, if you have had unprotected intercourse during your fertile window, there is a chance of conception. However, the presence of brown discharge on the first day of your period typically suggests that you are menstruating rather than experiencing implantation bleeding, which is usually lighter and occurs around the time your period is due.

If your menstrual cycle is usually regular and you notice significant changes, such as unusual discharge or missed periods, it may be worth taking a pregnancy test. If the test is negative and your symptoms persist, or if you experience other concerning symptoms (like severe pain or unusual odor), it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional.

Stress, hormonal imbalances, and lifestyle factors can also affect your menstrual cycle. If you’ve been under stress or have had changes in your routine, these could contribute to irregularities in your cycle.
In summary, brown discharge on the first day of your period is generally normal and often indicates the beginning of menstruation. However, if you have concerns about pregnancy or if your menstrual cycle continues to be irregular, consider taking a pregnancy test and consulting with a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
