Can cold medicine and brain relaxants be taken together?

Hello, doctor.
I previously experienced symptoms of orthostatic intolerance, and you prescribed me Sumin Capsule, advising that I could take it when I feel dizzy.
Today, I felt a slight dizziness, so I took one capsule.
However, I also have cold symptoms recently and have been taking Taisho Baibao Cold Medicine.
I would like to confirm if these two medications can be taken together.
Additionally, I received the Moderna vaccine this past Monday, and I want to know if Sumin will affect the efficacy of the vaccine.
Thank you!

TING, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/07/23

Hello Ms.
Ting,
Regarding the Da Zheng Bai Bao cold medicine you mentioned, each package contains:
- Acetaminophen .................
300 mg
- Dextromethorphan HBr ...........
15 mg
- dl-Methylephedrine HCl ...............
10 mg
- Potassium Guaiacol Sulfonate ...................
60 mg
- Carbinoxamine Maleate .............................
2.5 mg
- Caffeine Anhydrous ........................
30 mg
- Thiamine mononitrate ............................
8 mg
- Riboflavin ..............................
4 mg
Indications: Acetaminophen has central antipyretic and analgesic effects.
Carbinoxamine Maleate is an antihistamine.
Dextromethorphan HBr and dl-Methylephedrine HCl have cough suppressant properties.
Potassium Guaiacol Sulfonate is an expectorant.
Additionally, it contains caffeine, vitamin B1, and B2.
For upper respiratory infections, unless in a medically underserved area, it is recommended to use single-ingredient medications, as viral infections require more rest and enhancement of the immune system.
You mentioned Suzin and combination cold medications.
These medications can be taken together without affecting vaccine efficacy.
Thank you for your inquiry! Wishing you good health, peace, and joy.
Dr.
Jiang Junyi, Taoyuan Medical Center, cares for you.

When considering the simultaneous use of brain-soothing medications, such as Sibelium (flunarizine), and cold medications, it's essential to understand the pharmacological properties of each drug and their potential interactions. Sibelium is primarily used to treat vestibular disorders and migraines, and it works by blocking calcium channels, which can help reduce dizziness and improve blood flow to the brain. Cold medications, on the other hand, typically contain a combination of ingredients aimed at alleviating symptoms such as fever, congestion, and cough.

In your case, you mentioned taking a cold medication that contains acetaminophen, dextromethorphan, and other ingredients. Generally, there are no significant interactions reported between flunarizine and common cold medications. However, it is crucial to consider the sedative effects that both types of medications can have. Flunarizine may cause drowsiness, and many cold medications, especially those containing antihistamines, can also lead to sedation. Therefore, if you are taking both medications, you should be cautious about activities that require alertness, such as driving or operating machinery.

Regarding your concern about the Moderna vaccine, current evidence suggests that taking flunarizine or cold medications does not negatively impact the efficacy of vaccines, including the COVID-19 vaccines. The immune response generated by the vaccine should remain intact regardless of these medications. However, it is always wise to consult with your healthcare provider about any specific concerns you may have regarding medications and vaccinations.

In summary, it is generally safe to take Sibelium and cold medications together, but be mindful of the potential for increased sedation. Always consult your healthcare provider if you have any doubts or if you experience any unusual symptoms while taking these medications. Additionally, maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you are taking is crucial for ensuring your safety and optimizing your treatment plan.
